[Figure: Pain Without Redness]
Question: Why do some people suffer from eye disease characterized by pain without itching or redness? Answer: This is caused by deficiency of Qi and the brain, disharmony of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, and stagnation of Qi and Blood. Stagnation of the Seven Emotions, with Liver Wind rushing upward, and conflict between Wind Qi in the head, result in pain without itching or redness. At the onset, urgent medication should be taken to prevent transformation into Wufeng Neizhang (Five Winds Internal Cataract), which is difficult to treat. It is appropriate to administer Touhong Yunqi San (Red-Permeating Qi-Regulating Powder), Chuanxiong San (Ligusticum Powder), and Zhuyang Hexue Tang (Yang-Assisting and Blood-Harmonizing Decoction).
Touhong Yunqi San (Red-Permeating Qi-Regulating Powder)

Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with hot wine.

Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, washed down with rice soup.

[Figure: Redness Without Pain]
Question: Why do some people suffer from eye disease characterized by redness without pain? Answer: This is due to Liver Heat. The Bladder is astringent and urination is difficult; Heart Fire is blazing. The blood in the human body is like the flow of rivers and marshes. If the channels are clear, the water flows into the sea; if the Bladder is obstructed, floodwaters flow recklessly. When human blood flows smoothly, the meridians are unobstructed, connecting up and down in a continuous cycle; when it flows reversely, it scatters and acts recklessly, pouring upward into the eyes, resulting in redness without pain. Now, with Bladder dysfunction, Heart Fire flaming upward, and excess heat in the Liver channel, is this not analogous to the obstruction of rivers and marshes? Treatment requires the use of Bazheng San (Eight-Normality Powder), Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder), and Shun Gan Wan (Liver-Soothing Pill).

Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ruiren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen Amarum) (30 grains).
Grind the above herbs together into powder, and form pills with refined honey.
[Figure: Left Redness Spreading to Right]
Question: Why does redness in the left eye spread to the right eye? Answer: This is due to Fire-Heat in the Yin channels. Yang contains Yin operation, which corresponds to the Liver; Yin contains Yang operation, which corresponds to the Heart. Pathogenic heat accumulates in the Liver; Liver pathogen interacts with the Heart and transmits to the eyes. The left eye belongs to the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel, and the right eye belongs to the Taiyin (Greater Yin) channel. Therefore, left redness spreads to the right because the Taiyang channel is vigorous. It is appropriate to administer Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellows Pill) and Xixin San (Heart-Washing Powder).
Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellows Pill) (Add Huangbai [Phellodendri Cortex] if heat is severe)

Take equal parts of each herb, decoct in water, and take orally.
