Chongfeng Leyu (Tearing induced by wind pathogen) presents with various symptoms. One type arises from Kidney Qi deficiency failing to nourish Liver Wood (the Liver belongs to Wood and relies on Kidney Water for generation), causing the Liver Meridian to be invaded by Wind pathogen and become deficient, thereby stirring internal Liver Wind, leading to tearing upon exposure to wind. For cases of Liver Meridian deficiency, Zhile Bubgan San (Stop Tearing and Nourish Liver Powder) is appropriate.
The general principle for stopping tearing involves using potent medications: for severe cases, apply eye drops; for "Hot Tears" (tearing accompanied by heat signs such as redness, swelling, and pain), internally administer Chuanxiong Chatiao San (Ligusticum Wallichii Tea-Regulating Powder) and externally apply Qingliang San (Cooling Powder); for tearing caused by Liver Wind, Cangzhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is suitable.
If tearing occurs without redness or pain, it is termed "Wind Tear"; if accompanied by swelling, pain, redness, and dryness, it is termed "Hot Tear".
If tearing flows profusely upon exposure to wind, occurring more frequently in winter and less in summer, regenerating immediately after wiping, and persisting throughout all seasons, it is termed "Cold Tear". Cold Tear can be treated with Ruxiang Chuanwu Wan (Frankincense and Aconite Pill): take one Chuanwu (Radix Aconiti Preparata), two Caowu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparata, peeled), 1 qian (approx. 3.7g) of Mingfan (Alumen), and one piece of white flour dough, grind into fine powder, and bind with pig bile into pills the size of millet seeds. Use one pill at bedtime, placing it in the inner canthus of the eye; tearing will cease. Alternatively, treat with moxibustion.
Another condition involves long-standing coldness of the Lung Zang. The Eye has a major acupoint named Leitang (Tear Hall), which connects to the Lung and Intestines. This type of tearing is difficult to cure. Long-term flow may cause dim vision. In individuals with weak Blood and Qi, where the eyes are neither swollen nor red but appear pale purple-red, accompanied by dryness, pain, and tearing, it is termed "Deficiency Tear".
Moxibustion Method: For chronic cold tearing, moxa-burn Shangyingxiang (Yingxiang Upper) 2 points, Tianfu (Heavenly Mansion) 2 points, and Ganshu (Liver Shu) 2 points. These are located 1 cun lateral to the spinous process of the ninth thoracic vertebra.
Zhile Bubgan San (Stop Tearing and Nourish Liver Powder): Treats continuous tearing upon wind exposure due to Liver deficiency. It is also suitable to moxa-burn Jingming (Bright Eyes) 2 points (located slightly above the inner canthus), Fengchi (Wind Pool) 2 points, and Linqi (Approaching Flow) 2 points.
