When children develop corneal opacities (翳, nebula or leukoma) in the eyes, it is caused by excess heat in the Spleen and Stomach. It may also result from toxic pathogens acquired in the womb, or because the wet nurse consumes spicy and hot foods, all of which can cause eye diseases in infants.
Medication should be determined based on the child's age, duration of illness, and severity. For infants aged one and a half years or less, the medicine should be taken by the mother, or clam shell powder (Ge Qiao, 蛤壳) can be administered to the infant. For children aged two to three years, this is attributed to fetal toxins. If eye disease occurs after weaning, it is a condition contracted by the child themselves, unrelated to the mother. In such cases, the medicine must be taken directly by the child. Dietary restrictions include avoiding greasy, fried foods, as well as sweets and sugary fruits. These restrictions are not only for eye health; failure to observe them may lead to frequent convulsions (惊症), progression to malnutrition syndromes (Gan syndrome, 疳证), and further damage to the eyes, potentially resulting in incurable conditions. Specific treatments for Gan-eye are detailed elsewhere; this section addresses general pediatric corneal opacity. The opacity on the black pupil may be as small as hemp seeds or beans, or as large as radish flowers, which differs significantly from Gan-eye. Apply Sanhuang Dan (Three-Yellow Pill, 三黄丹) and Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder, 珍珠散) in equal proportions to the eyes.
Jiawei Xiugan San (Modified Liver-Cultivating Powder,
Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi, 栀子), Mint Herb (Bohe, 薄荷), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao, 连翘), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, 麻黄), Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao, 赤芍药), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo, 羌活), Angelica Root (Danggui, 当归), Rhubarb Root (Dahuang, 大黄), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 黄芩), Chrysanthemum Flower (Juhua, 菊花), Equisetum Stem (Muzei, 木贼), Tribulus Fruit (Bajili, 白蒺藜), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草).
Decoct with water and take after meals.
Question: Why do chickenpox/rash lesions enter the eyes of children? Answer: Children acquire toxic pathogens in the womb, inevitably leading to rashes and pustules. During the eruption, heat pathogens attack all five Zang organs. If the Liver receives excessive heat, pustules will necessarily form inside the eyes. It is appropriate to use Lianggansan (Cooling Liver Powder, 凉肝散).
Lianggansan (Cooling Liver Powder,
Aster Seed (Caoguoming, 草决明), Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen, 天花粉), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草), Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao, 赤芍药), Mung Bean Skin (Lvdoupi, 绿豆皮), Eyebright Herb (Gujingcao, 谷精草).
Grind into fine powder. Take 6 qian per dose, mixed with honey water.
Question: Why do chickenpox/rash lesions damage the eyes of children? Answer: This is due to deficiency-heat rising from the five internal organs. Treatment method: The classics state, "Do not use purgatives under any circumstances." Residual toxins should be resolved using mildly cooling formulas. At the onset, the eyeball appears red-purple, dry, and painful. Tongshensan (Divine Communication Powder, 通神散) can be used, or fresh Plantago Leaf (Cheqiancao, 车前草) can be mashed with honey water and frequently administered to clear fire pathogens from the Liver. If the condition progresses to blindness, with opacities or depressions in the pupil, the classics state that after chickenpox/rash, toxic qi stagnates in the Liver and damages the pupil. Tongshensan is indicated for treating pediatric chickenpox/rash affecting the eyes, capable of resolving toxicity.
Chrysanthemum Flower (Bai Juhua, 白菊花), Mung Bean Skin (Lv dou pi, 绿豆皮), Eyebright Herb (Gu jing cao, 谷精草), Aster Seed (Shijueming, 石决明 - calcined).
Grind equal parts into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decocted with one dried persimmon and one cup of rice juice until the liquid evaporates. Take at any time. Alternatively, if decoction is feasible, simply decoct this formula and take it.
