Treat cases where the disease persists after sweating or purgation, accompanied by irritability and restlessness; this formula is indicated.
Fuling (Poria) (4 liang, another version says 6 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, here specified as raw Shengyong) (1 piece), Gancao (Licorice Root) (2 liang, honey-fried/Zhi), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (dosage omitted in text).
The above five herbs are decocted with 5 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Strain the dregs. Take 7 ge warm, three times a day.
Song: Raw Fuzi one piece, Ganjiang one and a half liang; Gancao two liang, Fuling six liang, Renshen one liang match. Sweating damages Heart Yin fluids, purgation damages Kidney Qi/Essence. When Kidney restlessness and Heart vexation occur, they harmonize (Water and Fire interact, thus irritability settles).
Zhanglingshao states: This is due to the deficiency of Water and Fire Qi in Shaoyin caused by sweating and purgation. After sweating and purgation, the essence and fluids of Heart and Kidney are both deficient, leading to the persistence of the disease and Yin Fan (Yin vexation). Sini Tang-type formulas tonify the Kidney to calm Yin restlessness.
Treat cases after sweating where there is vexation and thirst, desiring to drink water; this formula is indicated.
Zhuling (Polyporus) (18 zhu), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) (1 liang 6 zhu), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (18 zhu), Fuling (Poria) (18 zhu), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (0.5 liang, bark removed).
The above five herbs are crushed into powder. Mix with rice water (Baiyin) and take one fangcunbi per dose, three times a day. Drink plenty of warm water; recovery occurs with sweating. (Neitang Fangyi records Fuling, Zhuling...)
Song: Zhuling, Baizhu, Fuling each 18 zhu; Zexie 1 liang 6 zhu fits perfectly. Guizhi 0.5 liang ground and mixed for administration; frequently swallowing warm water leads to recovery through sweating. (Wei Nianting says...)
Second son Chen Yuanxi notes: Ling means command/order; it transforms Qi and unblocks fluid metabolism, acting as the master of commands. Zhuling, Fuling, and Zexie are all agents that transform Qi. By resolving the exterior and scattering pathogens, using a powder form scatters water-dampness. Taking warm water aids Yang Qi, allowing water essence to distribute throughout the body, nourishing Heart and Lung from above, reaching skin and hair from outside. A slight sweat clears both exterior and interior heat/vexation. Mixing with rice water follows the principle of drinking hot porridge after Guizhi Tang.
Treat Shanghan (Cold Damage) where sweating is followed by thirst; Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is indicated. If there is no thirst, this formula (Fuling Jiangzhi Tang) is indicated.
Fuling (Poria) (3 liang), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (1 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (3 liang).
The above four herbs are decocted with 4 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Strain the dregs. Divide into three warm doses.
Song: For excessive sweating without thirst, seek this formula; it also excellently treats Cold Damage with cold extremities and palpitations. Guizhi 2 liang, Gancao 1 liang, Shengjiang 3 liang, Fuling 3 liang; know that water and sweat share the same source.
Yu notes: This continues from the previous point about taking Wuling San and drinking warm water to induce sweating. People know the function of Wuling San is to induce sweating, but do not realize its indication lies in thirst. This is because the Spleen fails to transport and transform, not due to Stomach dryness. Extending this logic: failure to transport upwards causes thirst; failure to transport centrally causes water regurgitation; failure to transport downwards causes difficult urination. It can be known that the fluids of food and grain in the Middle Jiao are excreted, damaging Spleen Qi. When Spleen is damaged, it cannot transport fluids, causing thirst. Therefore, Wuling San is used to scatter water fluids. If there is no thirst, it indicates Middle Jiao fluids are undamaged; only Fuling Jiangzhi Tang is used. Utilizing Fuling's diuretic action prevents Kidney water from boiling over into sweat.
