If the patient's face is red, it indicates deficiency in the lower jiao (Lower Burner). Trembling and shaking of the hands and feet indicate that the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) has lost its governing function. Heaviness in the waist and legs indicates invasion by Cold-Dampness into the Three Yin Meridians (Taiyin, Shaoyin, Jueyin). Occasional fear or palpitations indicate that Yin-Cold pathogenic factors are affecting the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Excessive laughter manifests as dementia, while sorrowful distress relates to the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. If there is little pain in the head and neck, and walking remains normal, it indicates that the Cold pathogen is not in the meridians but within the interior organs. If there is pain in the head and neck, it means the pathogen has reversed upward from the interior to affect the meridians! Alternatively, if Winter-Latent Cold was present initially and triggered by internal factors, causing immediate onset, the headache may also be irregular. Occasional sighing: The *Ling Shu* states, "When Heart Qi is insufficient, the Heart Connection becomes tense; due to this tension, one sighs to relieve it." This indicates insufficiency of Fire in the Hand-Shaoyin Heart. Predecessors have correctly noted this.
These are typical manifestations seen at the beginning of the illness.
A body sensation as if beaten with a stick occurs when Yang Qi is exhausted and blood vessels become stagnant and obstructed, failing to nourish the body. A bluish-black complexion represents the Zi-Mu (Mother-Child) colors of the Kidney and Liver appearing simultaneously, indicating the revelation of the True Zang colors. Fatigue in the hands and feet leading to lying down indicates that Yang Qi in the four limbs is exhausted, and Yin Qi, which governs convergence, causes the desire to lie down. Lying facing the wall indicates a desire for stillness inherent in Yin. Dislike of hearing people speak indicates a desire for silence inherent in Yin. Drowsiness and dizziness indicate the interruption of Yuan Qi and attack by Pathogenic Heat on the Lung; or, if drowsiness is sought for self-nourishment accompanied by redness in the white part of the eye, it indicates the Lung suffering from Fire pathogen. Within three to four days, if the patient can walk without feeling particularly heavy, it indicates that Yang Qi is still on the exterior. By five to six days, if Yin is excessive and hot herbs cannot restore vitality, it is because Yin governs destruction leading to sudden collapse, unlike Yang Qi which lingers and strives for life generation.
Initial facial redness and distension are due to lower deficiency. Regarding death, turning blue first then red indicates that Yang Qi fails to generate, warmth fails to circulate, and it reverts to Northern Cold; this is the nature of its reversal. The Classic states: "If Yang Qi perishes first and Yin Qi exhausts later, the corpse will be blue; if Yin Qi perishes first and Yang Qi exhausts later, the corpse will be red." If Yin and Yang Poisons hide within each other, or only latent Yang exists, among these Yin Syndrome cases, some who died after sweating above half the body may not appear blue or black.
Why does Jueyin Syndrome present with whole-body blue-black discoloration resembling floral patterns in cold reversal?
The answer is: When Yang Qi cannot circulate in the four limbs, the meridians and collaterals on the body surface are blocked. Qi desires to move but cannot; when it finally moves, it is suddenly stopped. Thus, areas where Qi moved show slight purple color, while areas where Qi could not move and stopped turn black rather than blue. Hence, the body feels like it has been beaten, with pain in some areas and none in others. Whole-body blackness indicates complete absence of Yang Qi. Therefore, the *Treatise on Meridians* states: "Excess Cold causes blood to stagnate and congeal, resulting in blue-black color; excess Heat causes blood to be moist and lubricated, resulting in yellow-red color." This refers to such phenomena.
