The Assistant Magistrate (Xiancheng) Hou Junfu from Amadui, Baofeng County, suffered from long-term injury due to dietary accumulation and cold pathogenic factors while serving in the Imperial Guard. One day, he fell ill with a pulse that was extremely deep and fine, which is easy to distinguish; this was undoubtedly a Yin Syndrome (Yin Zheng).
Internal cold with external heat caused several spots to appear on his shoulders, back, chest, and hypochondrium. His speech was chaotic and delirious. His family, alarmed, said, "He is experiencing verbal delirium (Zhanyu); could it be a Heat syndrome?" I replied, "No. Yang Qi is forced by Yin Cold to ascend into the Lung, transmitting to the skin and hair, hence the slight eruption of spots. The Spirit (Shen) fails to reside in its abode, leading to confused speech resembling madness, but this is not verbal delirium." Although the muscle and surface felt hot, pressing them with the hand revealed a coldness penetrating like water after a moment. I administered herbs such as Sheng Jiang (Prepared Ginger) and Fu Zi (Aconite Root), totaling over twenty taels over several days. He then sweated profusely and recovered.
Upon seeing objects in the courtyard, children, chickens, and dogs, he pointed at them and said, "These are exactly the scenes from my dreams two or three days ago." This confirms that the Spirit indeed failed to reside in its abode. After recovery, when he stood up and walked, his madness recurred. Opening his eyes wide, he said, "I have now received an official appointment from the Provincial Secretariat as a Royal Horse Officer; why do you grand envoys not celebrate for me?" Upon examination, the pulse had become deep and retreating again, and he had not had a bowel movement for three or four days. I administered Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), totaling about half a jin within three days, and his illness completely resolved. Hou Gong's madness was not the madness of Yang Excess, but the madness of lost Spirit, which belongs to Yin. One should rely on the pulse as the verification; scholars should examine carefully, relying solely on the pulse rather than external symptoms.
Hou Balang from Baofeng contracted Wind externally and Cold internally. He self-administered Tongsheng San, resulting in profuse sweating, causing both internal and external Yang Qi to collapse, and he died before treatment could be effective.
His son, Guohua, subsequently suffered from Shanghan (Cold Damage) for four or five days, presenting with slight body heat and thirst with desire to drink water. Upon pulse diagnosis, the pulse was deep, wiry, and nearly absent, characteristic of the Jueyin Meridian. Treatment with warming herbs for several days yielded no improvement. Subsequently, using Sheng Jiang and Fu Zi, the pulse slightly returned and life signs revived. However, due to thirst, he privately drank a bowl of water, causing the pulse to retreat again. He presented only with an inability to lift his head or open his eyes. Inquiry revealed involvement of Yin Yi (Easy Transmission/Yin Exchange). If only Shaokun San (Burned Underwear Powder) were given, its cold nature would fail to support the Yang. Therefore, I decocted a large dose of Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction) and combined it with Shaokun San, administering two doses consecutively. This resulted in profuse sweating lasting two full days and nights before stopping. Why was this so? Because the sweat of extreme Yin emerged from the bone marrow after receiving warmth, thus the fluid sweat continued for two days and nights until cessation.
