Song of Breathing, Song of Breathing, the function of breathing is originally like a bellows (Tuoyue). Breathing comes and goes leisurely between the upper and lower parts. The rising and falling of breathing has a definite landing point. When harvesting medicine within breathing, one must know its maturity or immaturity; the method of breathing must not be mistaken. There is an aperture in the middle of breathing, and one fears there will be no sound and joy in breathing. Exhalation goes with the wind through the throat, while inhalation is seized inversely from the heels. Everyone merely treats breathing as a passing phase, failing to recognize true breathing and sitting in meditation in vain. The character "Hu" (exhale) resides below the Big Dipper, and the character "Xi" (inhale) dwells in the Nangong Jiao constellation. The character "Hu" moves the energy up to the peak of Kunlun. The character "Xi" transports it into the Sanqing Pavilion. "Hu" loudly opens to the aperture, and "Xi" stirs the bellows before birth. This is not the place of mouth and nose breathing; it is truly laughable that fools make such great mistakes. If one could obtain true breathing after death, one would return to the original state and live again in the world. If someone could penetrate the key of breathing, they should visit a enlightened master to explain it in detail.
*Summary of Mulberry and Elm* (Tao Fu)
The nose is Yang, absorbing the six Qi of Heaven; the mouth is Yin, consuming the five grains of Earth. Qi nourishes Yuan Qi, and grains nourish Blood. Qi attaches to Blood to become solid, just as Heaven attaches to Earth; Blood relies on Qi to flourish, just as Earth relies on Heaven. When Blood and Qi are harmonious, Essence is generated; when Spirit and solidity are firm, Shen is clear. If "Cun" (preservation) cannot attract retention, and "Shi" (vision) cannot prohibit movement, those who can "prohibit" can see for a long time, and those who can "preserve" have transcendent spirit.
*Words Heard While Pushing Open the Window* (Li Yuheng of Yunjian)
Alchemical texts say: When the Five Elements proceed in their natural order, the Dharma realm becomes a pit of fire; when the Five Elements are reversed, the earth becomes treasure. Why can the vast earth become treasure? It is because the generation of the Five Elements all originates from Earth, with forms manifesting externally; thus generating Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire, causing the Qi of Kun Earth to leak. If Water does not flow outward but hides its substance in Metal, and Fire does not rise outward but hides its substance in Wood, and Metal and Wood merge and return to True Earth, then Qi will not dissipate. It becomes humans, animals, plants, birds, and fish, remaining firm and undissipated, turning entirely into gold. Qi will not decay. Thus it is said: The whole ground is gold. Knowing this, humans can internally consolidate Spirit and Essence, not expending them outwardly. The Three Treasures within the body will also remain undecayed like gold. What doubt remains regarding longevity and enduring vision?
