[Mentha Haplocalyx (Bohe)]
Pungent in taste, slightly cold in nature, non-toxic, enters the Lung Meridian. It primarily treats aphonia due to wind-stroke, abdominal distension below, removes head wind, unblocks and benefits joints, breaks blood stasis and stops dysentery, clears wind and reduces swelling, guides various herbs into the Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) levels, can induce sweating to expel toxins, clears and benefits the meeting point of the six Yang meridians at the head, and dispels wind pathogens among various heat pathogens.
Commentary: Bohe has the function of moving outward to the exterior, suitable for managing the Taiyin domain; it is indeed its specialty for various wind-stroke conditions. As for blood dysentery, the pathology lies in stagnation and coagulation; now, benefiting from its pungency to smooth Qi flow, the coagulated stagnation naturally resolves.
[Taraxacum Mongolicum (Pugongying)]
Bitter in taste, warm in nature, slightly toxic, enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. It tonifies original Qi, dispels wind-dampness, strengthens sinews and bones, promotes growth of eyebrows and hair, darkens beard and sideburns, and brightens ears and eyes. It is best taken with wine, harvested on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.
Commentary: The efficacy is as described above, suitable for managing the Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians. The military command of Gaoyou considers its nature to be warm, which is correct! Materia Medica texts state its nature is cold, which contradicts its primary uses; is this not an error? Long-term consumption greatly tonifies and benefits. Therefore, Zhang Yong presented a memorial to the Emperor stating: "Gold edges, silver lines, white roots, purple stems, who would know that within extremely humble things lie extraordinary treasures? This subject consumed a hundred doses, resulting in clear hearing and sight; after gradually consuming for a full year, the beard turned black again." Luo Ning suffered a wind-stroke after falling from a horse and unexpectedly recovered after ten doses. Monk Zhiyan, at seventy years old with facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye), recovered instantly after several doses. One like Zhang Yizhou could be said to understand its application! The root should be removed, and the stems and leaves finely chopped, pounded to extract juice, then boiled down into a paste. Using Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang) decocted into paste, and refined honey to consolidate the three ingredients, remove fire toxicity, and take mixed with wine, the efficacy is wondrous and cannot be fully described. The so-called "slightly toxic" refers to raw usage causing vomiting. Now that it has undergone processing, the toxicity is removed while the efficacy is preserved.
[Potentilla Anserina or similar species (continued description of Pugongying context)]
Bitter and sweet in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic, enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians. It transforms heat toxins, eliminates malignant sores and scrofula, resolves food poisoning, and disperses stagnant Qi. Finely chop, combine with Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis (Rendongteng) to extract juice, add to wine, to treat mastitis. Sleepiness after ingestion indicates its action; upon waking, the illness is resolved.
Commentary: Danxi stated: "The yellow flowers of Pugongying belong to Earth, suitable for entering the Taiyin and Yangming meridians." There is a variety with similar flowers, leaves, and stems but taller stature, which is incorrect. The true plant is short and prostrate to the ground, light and brittle in texture, exudes white juice when broken, and its dried flowers are hollow like scallion tubes. It blooms throughout the four seasons, sets seed after flowering, contains seeds in the fluff, and grows wherever it falls, revealing its endowment with the harmonious nature of Heaven and Earth, thus treating various toxins. Also known as Huanghua Diding, it is famous for treating ding sores (carbuncles).
