Lei Gong said: When using (Bai E, White Kaolin), do not select those that are greenish in color and white at the base.
When using, first crush it alone until fine, sift it three times, then grind it in a mortar. Subsequently, wash it with salt water solution and dry it. For every two taels of Bai E to be processed, use one fen of white salt, add it to one dou of water, boil it in a copper vessel for more than ten boils, and then use this boiled water to wash the Bai E, thereby preventing it from causing intestinal dryness and constipation.
Lei Gong said: Shi Sui Qian (Stone Marrow Lead) is Zi Ran Tong (Natural Copper). When using, do not select those with square golden teeth; these square golden teeth resemble Shi Sui Qian closely. If mistakenly ingested, they can induce vomiting and death. Shi Sui Qian resembles dried silver mud in color and has a slightly sweet taste.
If collected, first crush it by pounding, then decoct it with Gan Cao Tang (Licorice Decoction) for one fu shi (a four-hour period or approx. two hours depending on context, traditionally 12 double-hours but here likely shorter given "to tomorrow"). Strain it out the next day, spread it to dry, pound it in a mortar, sieve it again, soak it in vinegar overnight. The next day, coat a porcelain jar with Liu Yi Ni (Six-One Mud), fill it with about two sheng of material, and nurture it over gentle and strong fires for three days and nights until completely dry, then cover it.
If processing five taels, use two yi of vinegar as the limit.
Lei Gong said: When using, keep it far from smoke and fire, place it in high halls. Brush off dust, sieve, and use.
Lei Gong said: When using, must carefully identify to avoid misuse. There are Wu Tou (Aconiti Radix), Wu Hui (Aconiti Radix Cum Radicula), Tian Xiong (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Ce Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix), and Mu Bie Zi (Strychni Semen). Wu Tou has few stem leaves, long body, black, with few lateral points; Wu Hui has a bluish-gray skin, with eight or nine soybean-sized buds surrounding it, depressed bottom, black like iron; Tian Xiong is complete but short, without points, with eleven lateral buds around all sides, bluish-gray skin, this is Tian Xiong; Ce Zi is obtained, which is just small lateral buds like jujube pits attached to the side of Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata); Mu Bie Zi refers to those among the Hui, Fu, Xiong, Wu, Ce that are connected, called Mu Bie Zi, not used in medicine; if taken, it causes blindness. If it is Fu Zi, with a flat bottom, nine angles, iron-colored, each weighing one tael, it is qi-complete and usable. Dig a pit one chi deep in the afternoon on the ground under the house, place it inside for one night, take it out the next morning, bake dry, and use.
For roasting, do not use ash fire mixed with miscellaneous wood fire; only willow wood fire is best.
If using the yin-processing method, use raw material, remove tips and bottoms, slice thinly, soak in Dong Liu Shui (East-flowing Water) and Hei Dou (Black Soybeans) for five days and nights, then strain out, sun-dry, and use.
When using, yin-processing is required. After removing skin and tips, for every ten taels of herb, use five taels of raw Wudou (Black Soybeans) and six sheng of Dong Liu Shui (East-flowing Water).
