Lei Gong said: When using (Bixianzi/Ricinus Communis Seed), do not use those that are black and short or red and slender, as they grow on wild grapevines, have pointed ends at both poles, are toxic, and are not used in prescriptions. The true Ricinus Communis Seed resembles Croton Seed (Badou) in shape and has yellow and black spots on its segments.
When preparing for use, first boil the whole seed with salt water for half a day, remove the husk, extract the kernel, grind it, and then use it.
Lei Gong said: When using (Gusuibu/Drynaria Rhizome), use the flowers from the previous year in spring, the roots in summer, and the entire plant in autumn and winter.
To prepare a decoction, use only the roots. Finely slice them with a copper knife, pound them in a willow mortar to obtain natural juice, and slowly simmer in a pot until it becomes like thin maltose syrup; use as needed.
Lei Gong said: When using (Cangzhu/Atractylodes Rhizome or similar root), one must select reeds growing against the current. The roots grow against the water flow, appear yellowish, plump, and dense, and taste sweet.
During processing, after harvesting, remove the nodes and whiskers, as well as any reddish-yellow parts, finely chop, and use.
Lei Gong said: When using (a certain Artemisia species), do not use Honghao (Red Mugwort) and Xiehao (Evil Mugwort). These two resemble Jiaohao (Horned Mugwort) closely, but their aromatic quality is shorter-lived than that of Jiaohao.
During processing, after harvesting, finely chop them on a locust wood cutting board and use.
Lei Gong said: When using (a certain fruit or seed), after harvesting, remove the leaves and vines. Place them in a raw silk bag, hang them by the corner of the eastern room to dry, split them into slices, take the inner kernel, remove the septum, and ensure it is clean before use.
For the seeds, do not remove the membranous testa completely; use them together with the skin.
Lei Gong said: After harvesting, wash thoroughly with clear water, scrape off the outer epidermis, cut into bean-sized pieces on a locust wood board with a copper knife. Then, place them in a raw linen bag, soak overnight in black soybean water, take out, mix with wine to moisten, and steam from Si hour (09:00-11:00) to Hai hour (21:00-23:00). Take out and sun-dry.
Do not come into contact with iron, as it will cause graying of the beard and hair.
Lei Gong said: After harvesting, remove the stems and leaves, using only the fruits.
When preparing for use, first wipe the thin shell skin clean with cloth, mix with wine, steam from Si hour to Shen hour (15:00-17:00), take out, and sun-dry for use.
Lei Gong said: When using (Gusubi/Drynaria Rhizome or similar hairy rhizome), after harvesting, first use a copper knife to scrape off all the yellow-red hairs, then finely chop. Mix with honey to moisten, steam in a willow steamer for one day, take out, and sun-dry.
Additionally, "Ganning Ji" records: After removing the hairs and chopping finely, mix with raw honey and steam from Si hour to Hai hour. Sun-dry according to the previous method, grind into powder, and use.
