Lei Gong said: When using, first scrape off the coarse skin. Mix with butter (Su) and honey (Mi), roast until fully absorbed. Once roasted and dried, finely chop and use.
For every jin (approx. 500g) processed, use 2 liang of butter and 3 liang of honey. Mix these two ingredients together for use.
Lei Gong said: When using, first soak in hot water, remove the skin and tips, and split into two halves. Boil with Mang Xiao (Mirabilite) and Mutong Cao (Akebia Caulis) and Reng Ren (Prunus Persica Seed/Prunus Armeniaca Kernel context implies specific kernel here, likely Prunus armeniaca or similar, but text says Reng Ren) together for one shichen. Strain, discard the medicinal residues, take the Reng Ren, grind into a paste, and add to prescriptions as required.
For every 4 liang processed, use 1 liang of Mang Xiao and 7 liang of Mutong Cao.
Lei Gong said: There are male and female varieties. The male grains are small; the female grains are large, resembling jujube pits. Prescriptions mostly use the female variety due to its stronger efficacy; the male variety is used for making pastes and syrups.
If using the male variety, the tip/spine must be removed, as it is where the seed develops and can cause carbuncles on the back.
