In the area of both temples, a carbuncle suddenly appears, with redness, swelling, and protrusion. The face, eyes, and nose also swell, making the appearance extremely unsightly and different from one's usual look; this is a Yang Toxic syndrome. Since the temples are close to the Taiyang (Bladder) channel, which is a region of abundant Yang Qi, Yin Qi cannot reach this location. Carbuncles appearing in the temples should be treated according to the principles for Yang syndromes. However, although it is a Yang syndrome, it often transforms into a Yin syndrome. Therefore, when using Yang-warming herbs, Yin-nourishing herbs must be added to prevent such transformation. If the lesion has already ulcerated, Yin-nourishing herbs should outweigh Yang-warming herbs, followed by careful adjustment and proper treatment. The formula used is Libin Tang (Temple-Carbuncle Decoction): *Honeysuckle Flower* (Jinyinhua, 3 liang), *Angelica Dahurica Root* (Baizhi, 3 qian), *Chinese Angelica Root* (Danggui, 1 liang), *Sichuan Lovage Rhizome* (Chuanxiong, 1 liang), *Prunella Spike* (Xiakucao, 1 liang). Decoct in water and drink. For un-ulcerated cases, two doses will resolve it; for ulcerated cases, four doses will resolve it. This formula uses Honeysuckle Flower and Prunella Spike to clear Fire-Toxicity, while Angelica Dahurica Root and Sichuan Lovage Rhizome guide the medicinal action to the temples and Taiyang region, allowing Honeysuckle Flower and Prunella Spike to better exert their pathogen-dispelling effects. Furthermore, the addition of Chinese Angelica Root tonifies Qi and Blood, thereby benefiting both Yin and Yang. When Righteous Qi is sufficient, Evil dissipates; how could recovery not be rapid?
Secret Formula:
Libin Tang treats temple carbuncles well,
Three liang of Honeysuckle and three qian of Baizhi.
One liang each of Chuanxiong and Danggui strengthen Qi and Blood,
One liang of Xiakucao decocted in water.
The Haocao Yin (Mugwort-Grass Decoction) is also effective for this condition: *Artemisia Annua Herb* (Qinghao, 1 liang), *Scrophularia Root* (Xuanshen, 1 liang), *Sichuan Lovage Rhizome* (Chuanxiong, 1 liang), *Rehmannia Root* (Shengdi, 1 liang), *Prunella Spike* (Xiakucao, 1 liang), *Asarum Root* (Xixin, 1 qian), *Vitex Fruit* (Manjingzi, 1 qian). Decoct in water and drink; effectiveness is seen in two to three doses.
Secret Formula:
Haocao Yin consists of Qinghao, Xuanshen, and Chuanxiong,
With Shengdi and Xiakucao, each one liang combined.
One qian each of Xixin and Manjingzi,
Two or three doses yield boundless efficacy.
Some individuals indulge excessively in sexual intercourse with favored prostitutes, leading to a needle-like pain at the urethral meatus, indicating that the Toxic Miasma has penetrated deeply. Soon after, "Fish Mouth" (a chancre-like lesion associated with syphilis) appears, followed by "Gan Chuang" (chancre/ulcer), and subsequently, sores erupt all over the body. Yellow pus floods the area, emitting an unbearable foul odor. People assume this indicates excessive toxicity and frequently use harsh detoxifying herbs. However, they do not realize that the more one attacks the toxin, the more severe the sores become; the more numerous the sores, the harder they are to heal. Often, rotting and suppuration occur, causing great harm. The toxicity of Yangmei Chuang (Syphilitic Sores) typically enters the body during ejaculation, as semen loss depletes Yuan Qi (Original Qi), allowing the toxin to invade via the deficiency. If Yuan Qi is sufficient, even if the toxin enters, transmission remains mild, and recovery can occur through a single discharge. Now, with systemic eruption of toxic sores, it is clearly a severe deficiency syndrome with deep-seated internal toxicity. Without tonifying deficiency to drain the toxin, how can efficacy be achieved? Using harsh detoxifying herbs is akin to adding stones to a sinking ship! The formula used is Ersheng Tang (Two Raw Decoction): *Smilax Glabra Rhizome* (Tufuling, 3 liang), *Raw Astragalus Root* (Sheng Huangqi, 3 liang), *Raw Licorice Root* (Sheng Gancao, 3 qian). Decoct in water and drink. After four doses, sores gradually turn red; after another four doses, they dry up; after four more doses, full recovery occurs. Tea must be avoided while taking this formula. The brilliance of this formula lies not in direct detoxification, but in using Astragalus Root to tonify Qi; when Qi is robust, pathogens naturally cannot remain. Combined with Raw Licorice Root to transform toxicity and Smilax Glabra Rhizome to guide toxins out, the toxin is expelled without damaging Righteous Qi. Since generating Qi facilitates nourishing Blood, this represents a clever therapeutic approach. Piande Tang is also excellent: *Honeysuckle Flower* (4 liang), *Chinese Angelica Root* (2 liang), *Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome* (Baizhu, 2 liang), *Smilax Glabra Rhizome* (1 liang), *Trichosanthes Root* (Tianhuafen, 3 fen), *Licorice Root* (5 qian). Decoct in water and drink; ten doses lead to cure.
Secret Formula:
Ersheng Tang treats Yangmei sores,
Three liang Tufuling and three liang Raw Huangqi.
Three qian of Gancao, after ten doses,
Redness begins, drying follows, sores can be healed.
Another prescription for Yangmei uses four liang of Honeysuckle,
Two liang each of Danggui and Baizhu, one liang Tufuling,
Three fen Tianhuafen and five qian of Gancao,
Ten doses sweep them all away.
When a chancre develops on the glans penis, patients often take harsh detoxifying herbs, hoping to expel the toxin via urination. If the large intestine is dry and constipated, these attacking herbs cannot travel directly through the intestines and will inevitably concentrate in the bladder. Since the bladder neck is narrow and urine flow is thin, the toxin is difficult to excrete. Consequently, the toxin does not stay in the intestines but accumulates externally on the genitalia. With intense toxicity, eruption is inevitable, leading to rotting. It is common for the glans to rot and fall off, along with the penis. People often apply external medications. While external treatments are necessary, applying them before clearing internal Fire-Toxicity is like pressing a stone on grass sprouts; recurrence is certain. One should first treat internally with decoctions. The formula is San Du Dan (Disperse-Toxin Pill): *Smilax Glabra Rhizome* (1 liang), *Phellodendron Bark* (Huangbai, 1 liang), *Licorice Root* (1 liang), *Gardenia Fruit* (stir-fried and ground, 1 liang), *Cinnamon Bark* (Rougui, 1 qian). Decoct in water and drink. After four doses, Fire-Toxicity exits via urine, and pain subsides slightly. Then, apply Shengshi Dan (Generate-Shield Powder).
Shengshi Dan: *Catechu* (1 liang), *Raw Licorice Root* (1 liang), *Stir-fried Phellodendron Bark* (3 liang), *Borneol* (3 fen), *Cinnabar* (1 qian), *Frankincense* (3 qian), *Myrrh* (3 qian), *Rhubarb Root* (3 qian). Grind into fine powder and store in a porcelain jar. Apply to the affected area for several days until pus and blood dry up. Continue application for one month until muscle and sinews regenerate and healing occurs. After recovery, vigorously tonify Qi and Blood by continuously taking Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) for one to two months. This ensures the external organ retains elasticity and fertility potential. Otherwise, excessive use of detoxifying and fire-clearing herbs leads to coldness in the Mingmen (Gate of Life), causing the external organ to become icy cold, preventing the restoration of Yang warmth. This illustrates the distinct sequence of prior and posterior treatments.
Secret Formula:
For rotting glans, San Du Dan is used,
Decoct one liang each of Fuling, Huangbai, Gancao, and Zhizi.
One qian of Rougui stops symptoms in four doses,
Then apply Shengshi Dan.
Shengshi Dan applied to the glans contains:
One liang each of Catechu and Gancao,
Three liang stir-fried Huangbai, three fen Borneol,
One qian Cinnabar, plus Frankincense and Myrrh,
Three qian Rhubarb, all ground fine.
Apply for one month, and the disease heals itself.
The Hushen Tang (Protect-Body Decoction) is also effective: *Maize* (1 liang), *Honeysuckle Flower* (1 liang), *Smilax Glabra Rhizome* (1 liang), *Cinnamon Bark* (3 fen), *Phellodendron Bark* (2 qian), *Plantago Seed* (Cheqianzi, 3 qian). Decoct in water and drink continuously for ten doses to cure.
Secret Formula:
Hushen Tang contains Maize and Honeysuckle,
One liang Fuling and three fen Cinnamon.
Three qian Cheqianzi and two qian Huangbai,
Ten continuous doses bring spring back.
When Gan Chuang initially appears and Fish Mouth is about to form, immediate treatment is essential. Delay allows sores to spread systemically, leading to bodily rot over time, often resulting in incurable conditions. Early treatment is crucial. However, people commonly use Wuhu San (Five-Tiger Powder) to attack toxins early on. Although toxins are expelled downward, this damages Yuan Qi and is not the optimal method. Reducing the dose of detoxifying herbs risks leaving residual toxins, which is also imperfect. The invasion of Toxic Miasma occurs due to Qi deficiency. Attacking toxins in a deficient state exacerbates deficiency, leaving no way to resolve the toxin. The correct method involves tonification combined with drainage, ensuring toxins are fully dispersed while Righteous Qi remains intact. The formula is Zaoduo Tang (Early-Seizure Decoction): *Ginseng Root* (1 liang), *Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome* (1 liang), *Chinese Angelica Root* (1 liang), *Astragalus Root* (1 liang), *Rhubarb Root* (1 liang), *Honeysuckle Flower* (1 liang), *Smilax Glabra Rhizome* (1 liang), *Gypsum Fibrosum* (1 liang), *Licorice Root* (3 qian), *Polygala Root* (Yuanzhi, 3 qian), *Trichosanthes Root* (3 qian), *Bupleurum Root* (Chaihu, 2 qian). Decoct in water and drink. After one dose, foul matter is expelled; bury it in the earth. After two more doses, foul matter in the intestines and stomach is cleared. Then, remove Rhubarb and Gypsum, add two liang of Smilax Glabra Rhizome, and decoct with the remaining herbs for four doses. Faint shadows of sores will appear under the skin across the body and head. Two more doses eliminate these shadows. Two additional doses prevent future outbreaks. This formula uses Rhubarb to purge toxins, Gypsum to clear heat-toxins, Licorice and Honeysuckle to transform toxins, and Bupleurum and Trichosanthes to disperse toxins. It is assisted by herbs that greatly tonify Qi and Blood. It resembles a brave army with strong soldiers led by a commander who annihilates enemies, leaving desolation and exhausting Yuan Qi! By adding Ginseng, Astragalus, Angelica, and Atractylodes—representing benevolence—to support the bravery, the strategy combines suppression and pacification, boosting morale. Defectors turn against their leaders, ensuring total victory. Slight removal turns bandits into good citizens, daring not to rob again. This formula benefits those indulging in pleasure greatly; I have personally witnessed and verified its efficacy. If the patient has Yin deficiency with Yang dryness, add several liang of Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi) or one liang of Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen) to the formula; do not arbitrarily add other ingredients.
Secret Formula:
Zaoduo Tang contains Renshen, Baizhu, Danggui, and Huangqi,
One liang each of Dahuang, Yinhua, Ling, and Shigao.
Three qian each of Gancao, Yuanzhi, and Huafen,
Two qian of Chaihu; one dose drains toxins well.
After four more doses, filth is gone;
Add two liang of Tufuling, remove Shigao and Dahuang.
For Yin deficiency and Yang dryness, add Xuanshen and Shudi;
Decoct and drink, the wonder is immeasurable.
The Xiehui Dan (Drain-Filth Pill) is also excellent: *Dandelion Herb* (3 liang), *Honeysuckle Flower* (3 liang), *Chinese Angelica Root* (1 liang), *Rhubarb Root* (5 qian), *Imperata Rhizome* (Wangbuliuxing, 3 qian). Decoct in ten bowls of water until reduced to two bowls. Drink slowly.
Secret Formula:
Xiehui Shen Dan uses Dandelion,
Three liang Honeysuckle and one liang Danggui follow.
Five qian Dahuang and Wangbuliuxing,
Decoct ten bowls to two, drink slowly for lightness.
Some individuals with systemic Yangmei sores take Calomel (Qingfen) to temporarily收敛 (contract/astringe) the sores for cosmetic concealment. They do not realize the toxin hides internally and will inevitably erupt externally. Soon, the toxin manifests in the nose, accompanied by a foul odor. Days later, the nose turns black, losing the sense of smell. These symptoms require urgent treatment. Otherwise, the nasal bridge may collapse, and once rotting begins, it is incurable. Small doses are ineffective because the toxin is too strong, like trying to fill a cup with water from a vast source. Moreover, Yangmei toxins often settle in the nose rather than other areas, indicating higher potency because the toxin resides in the Lung Meridian. The Lung governs Qi and Clear Qi. Toxic Miasma is not comparable to Clear Qi. When Toxic Miasma is in the Lung, Clear Qi is consumed to transform into toxin. Lung Qi emerges from the nose and is stored in the Kidney. When the Kidney absorbs the toxin, it transfers it to the Lung to scatter into the skin, allowing the toxin to exit externally. However, using Calomel to contract prevents external eruption, forcing the toxin back into the Lung. The Lung tries to return it to the Kidney, but the Kidney rejects it, causing it to rush upward to the nose. The nasal passages are narrow and cannot quickly expel it. Naturally, the toxin accumulates in the nose, causing unique suffering. Treatment requires using dispersing herbs to resolve toxicity. However, diseases of the Lung Meridian cannot be treated directly; one must treat indirectly, skipping one or two organs. The formula is Hubi San (Protect-Nose Powder): *Honeysuckle Flower* (3 liang), *Scrophularia Root* (3 liang), *Ophiopogon Tuber* (Maidong, 2 liang), *Platycodon Root* (Jiegeng, 5 qian), *Licorice Root* (5 qian), *Trichosanthes Root* (5 qian), *Cinnabar* (raw, mixed in, 1 qian). Decoct in water, mix with Cinnabar powder, and drink. After one dose, the nose regains sensitivity to smell; after four doses, black discoloration fades, eliminating worry about nasal collapse. Additionally, use Quanbi San (Whole-Nose Powder): *Scrophularia Root* (1 liang), *Honeysuckle Flower* (1 liang), *Chinese Angelica Root* (1 liang), *Cinnabar* (1 qian), *Ophiopogon Tuber* (5 qian), *Ginseng Root* (3 qian), *Licorice Root* (3 qian). Decoct in water and drink. After ten doses, systemic toxins are fully expelled, ensuring safety. The former formula is aggressive to save emergencies; the latter is mild to tonify deficiency. Cinnabar is used in both because Calomel toxicity cannot be removed without Cinnabar. Calomel is burned from Mercury, while Cinnabar is the mother of Mercury. Like a child meeting its mother, they bind together. Thus, when Cinnabar exits, Calomel exits with it—a secret unknown to most. If the nasal bridge has collapsed and rotted severely, use the previous Hubi San to save life, though the nose may not regrow.
Secret Formula:
Hubi Jiedu uses three parts Honeysuckle and Scrophularia,
Two liang Maidong, five qian each of Jiegeng, Gancao, and Huafen.
Boil and mix with raw Cinnabar powder;
Four doses change color, do not worry.
Quanbi San contains Xuanshen and Honeysuckle,
One liang each Danggui and Cinnabar,
Five qian Maidong, three qian each Renshen and Gancao.
Ten continuous doses ensure no error.
The Hanshui Zaizao Tang (Cold-Water Rebirth Decoction) is also effective: *Ophiopogon Tuber* (3 liang), *Licorice Root* (2 liang), *Fritillaria Bulb* (Beimu, 3 qian), *Prunella Spike* (2 liang), *Scutellaria Root* (Huangqin, 3 qian), *Forsythia Fruit* (Lianqiao, 3 qian), *Platycodon Root* (3 qian), *Calcitum* (Han Shui Shi, raw mixed in, 3 qian), *Red Poria* (Chi Fuling, 2 liang). Decoct in water and drink. One dose prevents rotting in unrotted cases; two doses stop rotting in existing cases; two more doses achieve cure.
Secret Formula:
Hanshui Zaizao uses three liang Maidong,
Two liang each Gancao and Xiakucao, plus Chi Fuling.
Beimu, Huangqin, Lianqiao, and Jiegeng,
Three qian Han Shui Shi, mixed in after decoction.
Some individuals suffer from systemic Yangmei sores that rot and cause extreme pain. People assume the Toxic Miasma is merely on the skin, unaware that it is actually Blood deficiency with toxin accumulation in the skin. The Yangmei toxin scatters into the bone marrow. Toxin in the bones is hard to treat, while toxin in the skin seems easier. However, if the toxin has not yet emerged from the skin, it still harbors in the bones. Draining bone toxin can be done downward and outward. But if the toxin has emerged, opening the pores, draining muscle toxin cannot be done superficially. Knowing the method makes drainage easy; lacking it leads to complications. Treatment should tonify deficiency to drain toxin and guide it out via urine. The formula is Erling Huadu Tang (Two Fulings Toxin-Transforming Decoction): *White Poria* (2 liang), *Smilax Glabra Rhizome* (2 liang), *Chinese Angelica Root* (2 liang), *Arnebia Root* (Zicao, 2 liang), *Honeysuckle Flower* (2 liang), *Raw Licorice Root* (2 qian). Decoct in half water and half wine. Ten doses lead to cure. This formula appears plain but has extraordinary effects by tonifying to drain. Yangmei originates from Kidney deficiency, which causes Blood deficiency. Not tonifying deficiency to treat sores, but instead draining toxins to consume Blood, explains why worldly treatments often fail.
Modified Erling Tang is also effective: *Rehmannia Root* (1 liang), *Poria* (1 liang), *Chinese Angelica Root* (1 liang), *Astragalus Root* (2 liang), *Smilax Glabra Rhizome* (2 liang), *Plantago Seed* (5 qian), *Saposhnikovia Root* (Fangfeng, 1 qian). Decoct in water and drink. Two doses relieve pain; two more doses cure.
Secret Formula:
Erling Huadu Tang uses Fuling and Danggui,
Plus Zicao, Tufuling, and Honeysuckle, each two liang.
Decoct in water and wine with two qian Gancao,
Ten doses cure, efficacy can be deduced.
Tonifying Deficiency and Draining Toxin Erling Tang,
One liang each Shengdi, Fuling, and Danggui,
Two liang each Huangqi and Tufuling,
Five qian Cheqianzi and one qian Fangfeng.
