Hair (Fa): Bitter in flavor, warm in nature, enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians. Wash clean with soapberry water, dry in the sun, place in a jar, seal tightly with salt mud. Calcine until "preserving nature" (Cun Xing), grind into an extremely fine powder. Indicated for hematemesis, epistaxis that does not stop, intestinal bleeding, and metrorrhagia; effective for all these conditions. [Hair is the surplus of blood; hair ash enters the blood level and disperses stasis. Therefore, its indication for various hemorrhagic disorders follows the principle that "blood stops when it sees black." It mostly treats the branch (symptoms) rather than the root, and should not be relied upon entirely as a tonic.] Also applicable for jaundice, [due to its functions of nourishing Yin, resolving blood stasis, and promoting urination.] Most effective in surgery. [When added to various plasters, it can detoxify, relieve pain, and promote granulation tissue growth.] The powder has an unpleasant odor. Do not use in patients with weak Spleen and Stomach.
Human Milk (Ren Ru): Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, enters the Heart, Lung, Liver, Gallbladder, and Kidney meridians. Use milk that is fragrant, thick, and white. Must be drunk hot in the early morning. If dried into powder, it is excellent for medicinal use. [Greatly tonifies True Yin and clears vexatious heat.] [When True Yin is tonified, vexatious heat naturally clears.] It is the "Jade Elixir" for consumptive diseases. [There are cases of chronic consumptive disease cured by drinking milk; is this not the effect of greatly tonifying True Yin?] It is the "Nectar" for dysphagia. [Since dysphagia is caused by deficiency of blood and fluids, milk best nourishes blood and fluids.] Treats silent wind (An Feng) with inability to speak. [Jie Ming Dan, used with pear juice and bamboo sap, utilizes its ability to nourish Yin, clear heat, and resolve phlegm.] Treats red eyes with tearing. [Soak Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) in milk, steam, and apply to the eyes; effective because the eyes require blood to see.] Should be used for emaciation. [Regular consumption makes one fat, white, and lustrous.] Suitable for the elderly. [Song of Milk Consumption: "When the Dantian is dry, swallow Chong Lou to moisten the decay; if one can drink over a jin in the morning, returning to youth lasts as long as heaven and earth."] Milk is transformed from blood, generated by the Spleen and Stomach, and controlled by the Chong and Ren vessels. Before pregnancy, it flows down as menstruation; after conception, it remains to nourish the fetus. After childbirth, it changes from red to white and flows up as milk. This is the profound mystery of creation, a divine elixir to cure diseases and prolong life. Do not take if suffering from slippery discharge/incontinence. Taking it with food causes stagnation and diarrhea.
Human Placenta (Ren Bao / Zi He Che): Also known as Zi He Che (Placenta Humanus). Sweet, salty, warm in nature; enters the Heart and Kidney meridians. Wash clean with rice-washing water, steam thoroughly in a pot, mash, mix with dry herbal powders, then dry in the sun or bake. One method: boil in urine or aged wine until very soft, mash, and mix for use. [Highly effective for various deficiency syndromes.] [Formed from the Qi of Kan and Li (male and female). For those with both Qi and Blood deficiency, it has the function of returning to the original state.] Good for those gradually becoming emaciated. [Due to insufficient Ying Blood and depleted Essence causing gradual emaciation, the placenta, formed from Essence and Blood Qi, tonifies via similarity. It is incomparable to minerals, stones, herbs, or trees. Boil with duck meat; do not let others know.] A divine product for tonifying Qi, nourishing Blood, and replenishing Essence, balancing Yin and Yang. Danxi said: For Qi deficiency, use with Qi-tonifying herbs; for Blood deficiency, use with Blood-nourishing herbs; for treating consumptive disease, use with herbs that remove bone-steaming fever.
Human Urine (Ren Niao): Salty, cold in nature; enters the Lung, Stomach, and Bladder meridians. [Clears mania and confusion caused by epidemic pathogens.] [Salty and cold properties remove pathogenic heat, hence *Ben Cao Jing Jiu Jing* indicates it for chills, fever, headache, and warm pathogens.] Resolves labor-heat and bone-steaming. [For any Yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity, where heat steams like burning, and other medicines are ineffective, only this can remove it.] Moves blood stasis without being too harsh; stops bleeding without causing stagnation. A holy medicine for hematemesis, epistaxis, and postpartum conditions. [Salty flavor enters the blood level, thus treating various blood diseases. Chu Cheng said: "The throat has orifices; coughing blood kills. Those taking cold-cooling herbs have one survivor in a hundred; those drinking urine have one death in a hundred." Wu Qiu said: "For various deficiency-type hematemesis, epistaxis, and hemoptysis, drinking urine is most effective because it nourishes Yin and descends fire rapidly. Drinking a cup immediately postpartum suppresses retained lochia miraculously."] A celestial prescription for trauma and falls. [For all injuries, it is suitable; it pushes out the old and generates the new, with great merit. Other medicines may fail to remove blood stasis and mislead people, but this is foolproof.] For fainting due to heatstroke,灌 (pour) in to restore consciousness. [Externally, pile earth around the navel to form a窝 (basin), fill with urine. Also treats burns causing unconsciousness and intestinal colic; drinking is effective.] For cough and lung atrophy, long-term use is good. [Entered into the Stomach, transported by Spleen Qi, sent up to the Lung, down through water passages to the Bladder, following its old path. Thus, it treats Lung diseases and guides fire downward.] Essential for those with Fire in the Lung and Kidney.
Ren Zhong Bai (Calculus Ureae): Main indications are the same. [One case of severe epistaxis with only gasping breath stopped immediately after taking it.] Also treats various sores of the mouth and tongue. Contraindicated for Yang deficiency without fire, indigestion, and loose bowels.
Jin Zhi (Gold Juice / Ren Zhong Huang): Also known as Ren Zhong Huang. Bitter, cold in nature; enters the Stomach meridian. One method: bury a jar in the soil, seal with palm fiber and cotton paper, cover top with yellow earth, pour fecal juice onto the earth, filter into the jar, cover with a basin and seal with mud. Take out after one year; clear as spring water, no foul odor, better with age. Danxi's method: Put Licorice Root powder into a bamboo tube, plug with wood, immerse in a latrine pit in winter, take out at Lichun (Start of Spring), hang in the wind to dry, break bamboo, take Licorice Root, dry and use. [Effective for treating mania and thirst in febrile diseases, clearing blood-heat in smallpox/rashes, and resolving hundred toxins.] [Most excellent for mushroom poison, insect poison, and poisoned arrows.] Excellent for sealing carbuncles/furuncles. [Scrape hot feces, apply to seal; change when dry; the root of the furuncle rots in one day.] Do not use unless there is Yangming excess-heat.
Menstrual Blood (Fu Ren Yue Shui): Salty, neutral in nature. Esoteric practitioners call it "Red Lead"; do not trust/use it. Essential for relapse after sexual intercourse following a febrile disease. [After a febrile disease has newly healed, sexual intercourse causes recurrence with body heat, irritability, and pulling pain in the lower abdomen and scrotum. Because residual heat is not cleared and Yin essence is damaged again, this herb nourishes Yin and removes heat, hence indicated. Commonly known as 'returning to the source.'] Also indicated for color jaundice due to sexual exhaustion. [Utilizes the principle of similarity and resonance.]
Menstrual Cloth: [Burn to ash and use.] Main indications are the same; also applied externally for ulcerated sores on male genitals. Filthy substances should be avoided when compounding medicines and during smallpox eruption.
