Similar to Bianyu (a scaleless fish), it is primarily used for various tonifying effects. It is scaleless and toxic; do not consume in excess. Those with red eyes and red whiskers are lethal. [Meng Shen's Annotation]
(1) Consuming it stabilizes Stomach Qi, harmonizes the Middle Jiao, benefits the Five Zang Organs, and is excellent when prepared as a soup. [Chen Cangqi's Annotation · Meng Shen's Annotation]
(2) Prepared as porridge, it treats acute dysentery. Consumed with garlic, it has a slight heat property; consumed with ginger paste, it has a slight cold property. [Sun Simiao's Annotation · Meng Shen's Annotation]

The wider variety is Crucian carp, while the one with a high back and narrow belly is Bianyu, which is less effective than Crucian carp. [Chen Cangqi's Annotation]

During the Sanfu days in May, amidst rain, they transform into fish. [Sun Simiao's Annotation · Chen Cangqi's Annotation · Meng Shen's Annotation]
(7) When eating Crucian carp, one must not eat sugar, as it causes intestinal parasites (Gan disease). For those suffering from heat-toxin due to Dan-Shi (mineral pill) ingestion, prepare a soup with the head of Zizania latifolia (Wild Rice Stem) and Crucian carp. Eating it for one or two meals will cure the condition. [Meng Shen's Annotation]

For those suffering from "Evil Qi" illness, prepare a carp soup, eat until full on an empty stomach, cover oneself with clothing, and lie down. Soon, sweat resembling white glue will emerge, flowing from the waist and legs. After the sweat ceases, bathe in Wu Mu Tang (Five Wood Decoction) and avoid wind for one day. Administer every three to five days thereafter to treat Damp-Wind. [Chen Cangqi's Annotation]
(1) Gallbladder: Primarily removes redness in the eyes and heat-toxin pain; instillation is effective. [Meng Shen's Annotation]
(2) Meat: Boiled plainly and eaten, it treats edema and leg distension, and directs Qi downward. Do not eat if there are old accumulations in the abdomen, as it harms the person. Those long-term users of Asparagi Radix (Tianmendong) should also avoid eating it. [Chen Cangqi's Annotation · Meng Shen's Annotation]
(3) If a bone splinter is stuck in the flesh, or if suffering from Wind-Water swelling and pain, burn Carp eyes into ash, insert into the wound, and allow the fluid to drain for healing. [Meng Shen's Annotation]
(4) Note: Fish blood treats pediatric Erysipelas (Dan Du); applying it cures immediately. [Meng Shen's Annotation]

(9) Its roe must not be consumed with Pig Liver. [Meng Shen's Annotation]
(10) Additionally, during preparation, always remove the two tendons on the spine and the black blood within the spine, as these are toxic. [Sun Simiao's Annotation · Chen Cangqi's Annotation · Meng Shen's Annotation]
(11) Grilled carp must strictly avoid smoke; do not let smoke enter the eyes, as it damages vision. Effects will manifest within three to two days. [Meng Shen's Annotation]
