One river snail (Biomphalaria glabrata), crushed and mixed with one li of Moschus (Musk) and one fen of Fructus Evodiae (Evodia Fruit), ground into fine powder, applied to the umbilicus, vomiting will cease immediately. If vomiting stops, quickly administer a decoction of Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) 1 liang, Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao) 3 qian, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao) 1 qian, Fructus Aurantii (Zhike) and Semen Arecae (Binglang) each 3 fen, taken for two doses, followed by Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) for regulation and recovery. If there is no improvement, treat according to the external therapies for Jin Kou Li (Jin Kou Dysentery) listed in the Dysentery chapter.
Postpartum constipation due to Qi deficiency failing to transport and Blood deficiency failing to moisten constitutes Xu Mi (Deficiency Constipation). Do not mistakenly use purgatives, which would add cold and obstruction; instead, use Run Zao Tang (Moisten Dryness Decoction): Tai Dangshen (Codonopsis), Gancao (Licorice) each 5 fen, Dang Gui Wei (Angelica Sinensis Tail), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Huo Ma Zi (Hemp Seed, shell removed and crushed), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) each 1 qian, Tao Ren Ni (Peach Kernel Paste).
Another prescription: Zhen Su Zi (Perilla Seed) 1 he, Huo Ma Zi (Hemp Seed) 3 he, pounded until mushy, mixed with one cup of water. Grind again to extract juice, mix with rice to cook porridge and eat; this is very effective. It is especially suitable for the elderly with deficiency constipation to use regularly.
Another prescription: Da Mai Ya (Sprouted Hordeum Vulgare), stir-fried and ground, take 3 qian per dose, mixed with boiling water. Or mix into porridge oneself; bowel movement will naturally become unobstructed.
Postpartum severe depletion of Qi and Blood leads to frequent urination and enuresis. Use Sheng Yang Diao Yuan Tang (Raise Yang and Regulate Origin Decoction) combined with Sang Piao Xiao San (Mantis Egg Case Powder): Zhi Huangqi (Prepared Astragalus Root), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Yi Zhi Zi (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit, shell removed, stir-fried) each 1.5 qian, Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 1 qian, with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube) as guides, decocted in water, mixed with Sang Piao Xiao San.

Postpartum Qi deficiency fails to transform and circulate body fluids, resulting in urinary retention or scanty urination even when voiding occurs. Do not mistake this for Lin Syndrome (Strangury) or Bi Syndrome (Obstruction); lightly using diuretic herbs will further deplete Qi and worsen the condition. Use Jia Wei Si Jun Zi Tang (Modified Four Gentlemen Decoction): Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Yun Ling (Poria), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed) each 1 qian, Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) 5 fen, Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) 3 slices, decocted in water, taken after meals.
In cases where lochia does not discharge, causing stagnant blood to obstruct urination, symptoms include lower abdominal distension and stabbing pain, alternating chills and fever, restlessness and irritability. Use Jia Wei Wu Ling San (Modified Five Ingredient Powder with Poria): Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) each 1 qian, Tao Ren (Peach Kernel, skin and tip removed), Hong Hua (Carthamus Flower) each 2 qian, decocted in water, taken on an empty stomach...
