Eye-Dotting Method: Take 6 fen of powdered licorice root (Gancao, 甘草) and 4 fen of plum-blossom borneol (Bingpian, 冰片), grind them together into a fine powder. For typhoid fever (Shanghan, 伤寒) within one to six days of onset, use this medicine to dot the inner canthus of the eye; for males, dot the left eye, and for females, the right eye. Sweating after application indicates recovery. If more than seven days have passed, regardless of gender, dot both eyes; this is highly effective.
Scallion and Ginger Moxibustion/Irrigation Method: Treats chest and diaphragm discomfort and pain caused by typhoid fever, as well as all conditions of cold accumulation, heat accumulation, food stagnation, phlegm obstruction, glomus (Pi, 痞), and water retention. It is also suitable for patients with weak middle qi who cannot tolerate purgative or resolving treatments. This method must be used to irrigate/press the area, allowing stagnant qi to move and evil pathogens to disperse, with miraculous efficacy. Take a large bunch of scallion whites with roots, two large pieces of old fresh ginger, and four or five raw radishes (if radishes are unavailable, substitute with 1 he of radish seeds). Mash these three ingredients together and stir-fry until hot (frying with wine is even better). Place them in two cloth bags and apply alternatingly to the affected area.
Scallion Irrigation Method: Treats cold invading the Three Yin meridians, manifesting as locked jaw and loss of voice, rigid limbs, spasms and pain, absence of pulse in both hands, resembling wind-stroke; or cold extremities with cyanotic lips, retraction of the male scrotum (commonly called "egg sac"), retraction of female nipples, or sudden death after sexual intercourse. Use only 1 jin of scallion whites, slightly mash them, stir-fry until hot, divide into two packages, and alternately press them below the navel. Wait for warmth to penetrate deeply for spontaneous recovery. Also, take 3 cun of scallion whites, mash them, decoct with wine, and administer orally to restore yang qi. This is Hua Tuo's emergency rescue formula. Alternatively, place a jar filled with hot fire or boiling water on top of the stir-fried scallions for pressing, which is even better. For severe cases, additionally moxa-ignite moxa cones the size of beans at Qihai (CV6, 1.5 cun below the umbilicus) and Guanyuan (CV4, 3 cun below the umbilicus), seven times each, so that the pulse gradually appears and hands and feet gradually warm up.
Egg Pressing Method: Treats typhoid fever where yin and yang cannot be distinguished, doctors do not recognize the condition and cannot prescribe medicine, patients have fixed eyes and open mouth without consciousness, along with body heat, inability to urinate or defecate, and absence of sweating. Boil ten eggs, keep the shells, cut off one end, leaving about 7-8 fen thickness, and place it over the patient's umbilicus. Insert a silver hairpin into the egg; if it turns black upon removal, replace the egg. Continue until the silver hairpin no longer turns black and the patient sweats profusely, indicating recovery. Administer Divine Porridge (Shenxian Zhou, 神仙粥, see Alternative Formulas) for convalescence to prevent sequelae. This is a secret recipe. Alternatively, refer to the external treatment formulas for yin-pattern typhoid fever listed later, which are also excellent.
Evodia Irrigation Method: Treatment method is the same as above. Use 1 sheng of Evodia fruit (Wuyu, 吴茱萸), crush it, moisten with wine, pack into two cloth bags, steam thoroughly in a steamer, and press frequently on the soles of both feet, as well as below the umbilicus, until qi penetrates and hands and feet become warm. Alternatively, add equal parts of wheat flour, salt, and scallion whites, stir-fry together until hot, and press. Replace when cool.
Perilla Irrigation Method: Treats typhoid fever complicated by internal injury and food stagnation, hard and distended lower abdomen, inability to urinate or defecate, inability to speak, impending collapse of spirit, staring eyes, rigid limbs, and critical conditions where medication is difficult to administer. Use several liang of Perilla leaves (Zisu, 紫苏), boil to make a hot decoction. Soak a towel in the hot liquid, wring it out, and apply while hot to the patient's abdomen and lower abdomen. Have someone rub in circular motions over the towel; replace when cool. After several applications, accumulated feces, hard masses, and blood stasis will naturally pass, with miraculous efficacy. If the anus is blocked, mix honey and pig bile into strips, and slowly insert them; this method has been repeatedly effective. However, after the accumulation passes, medication is required for regulation.
Another Formula: Earth Pressing Method (see Volume 11, Alternative Formulas) is also excellent.
Another Formula: Slice wild taro root and rub it against the third vertebral bone of the back. If pain or itching is felt, it is not typhoid fever; if there is no sensation of pain or itch, it is typhoid fever. Continue to rub the wild taro slices firmly over all joints of the body. Also, stir-fry taro slices, decoct with thick juice, and consume two or three times for recovery. Avoid meat and rice.
Another Formula: Quickly take ten seeds of Croton seed (Badou, 巴豆), crush them, mix with one qian of flour, shape into a cake, place inside the umbilicus, and moxa-ignite with small moxa cones five times. When qi reaches and unblocks, relief occurs.
