This condition, whether unilateral or bilateral, also occurs beside the throat. The affected area is neither red nor painful, and eating and drinking are unaffected. It differs from "Ezi" (tonsillitis) and must not be mistakenly treated as such. Some cases arise after illness due to deficiency, while others appear unknowingly. Recovery may take one or two months, several months, or even years without healing. The treatment method should be based on the patient's usual constitution—whether cold, hot, deficient, or excess—and administered gradually. It is still recommended to frequently apply Yuanzhu Dan (Pearl Pearl Pill) to the tumor site; with prolonged use, complete recovery will naturally occur. One must absolutely avoid using knives or needles; once ulceration occurs, it may lead to untreatable conditions!
At the onset of this Da Tou Wen Hou Dan (Big Head Plague Throat Duan), there is aversion to cold, fever, thirst, prickly coating on the tongue, swelling and redness of the head and face resembling a calabash, inability to open the eyes, pain and swelling in the throat causing obstruction, inability to speak, and drooling. This is a disease caused by epidemic pestilential qi, representing the most vicious and dangerous condition. Once the jaw becomes tightly closed and consciousness is lost, it becomes incurable. The most effective emergency method is to employ external treatments at the very beginning, which serves as the best first-aid prescription. First, apply sesame oil to the hollow behind the neck and scrape until red spots appear, similar to Guasha (scraping therapy). Immediately puncture these spots with a porcelain needle and have the patient suck out several mouthfuls of toxic blood. Then, prick the Shaoshang (LU11) acupoints on both hands to squeeze out bad blood. Subsequently, use nasal powders or fumigation methods, referring to the various external treatment methods for throat diseases in Volume 1, and administer urgent treatment; there might be a chance of salvation. Administer Shengong Pixie San (Divine Power Expelling Evil Powder) continuously for several doses, or employ methods to induce vomiting of phlegm and saliva. Continue applying Yuanzhu Dan. However, this epidemic disease is highly contagious. Anyone attending to the patient must use the Five Good Methods for Preventing Plague to protect themselves, avoiding infection being paramount.
The five methods are as follows: First, never visit plague patients' homes on an empty stomach. Those who can drink alcohol must consume Xionghuang Liquor (Realgar-infused Wine); those who cannot drink should eat garlic and smear Realgar wine into their nostrils. Alternatively, use Renma Ping'an San (Human-Horse Peace Powder) or grind Zijin Ding (Purple Gold Pellet) with water and apply it to the nostrils. Second, wash hands immediately after each visit and use the Bi San (Nasal Powder) from the bottle to induce sneezing for detoxification. Third, prepare a mixture of Ming Xionghuang (Refined Realgar), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Yazao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), Zihong Jiangxiang (Red Sandalwood), Tanxiang (Sandalwood), Guijianyu (Arceuthosium), Gansong (Nardostachys Radix et Rhizoma), Guangmuxiang (Costi Rhizoma), Gongdingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Paicao (Hedyotis Diffusa), and Shannai (Kaempferia Galanga), one qian each of the above, plus Shexiang (Musk) 5 li and Bingpian (Borneol) 3 fen. Grind all ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Choose an auspicious day to mix them in a clean room, ensuring no women, chickens, dogs, or mourners see the process. Sew the powder into triangular bags made of red silk, wear them on the body, and hang them above the inner side of doorways. Adding Tiger Head Bone or Axe Wood is particularly effective. Fourth, when visiting the patient, remain in the guest area and absolutely avoid harboring lustful or evil thoughts. Fifth, stir-fry Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 2 liang, stir-fry Guijianyu (Arceuthosium) 2 liang, and stir-fry Xiaohong Dousizi (Small Red Bean Seeds) 2 liang until cooked. Grind each finely and sieve, then mix evenly. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds using refined honey, coat them with Feiguo Zhusha (Processed Cinnabar), dry them, and take five pills daily on an empty stomach with plain boiling water. There is no better method for preventing plague than these. Both doctors and patients should prepare and use them so that the sick recover easily and the healthy remain uninfected, benefiting not only those suffering from throat diseases.
