After the umbilical cord of an infant falls off, place it on a new tile, surround it with fire, and burn until the smoke is almost gone. Take it out, place it on the ground soil, cover it with a bowl to preserve its properties, then grind into powder. Prepare transparent Cinnabar (Zhusha) by water levigation into an extremely fine powder. If the umbilical cord weighs 5 fen, use 1.5 fen of Cinnabar. Decoct fresh Rehmannia Root (Shengdi) and Angelica Sinensis Root (Guishen) to make a concentrated decoction of about one or two *xian* shells volume. Mix this liquid with the previous two powders and apply to the infant's body and the nursing mother's nipples. Administer within one day; the next day, foul turbid matter will be discharged in the stool, preventing smallpox and chickenpox for life.
For newborns suffering from wind invasion, causing nasal congestion and inability to suckle, do not easily use dispersing methods. Instead, use large Arisaema Rhizome (Datian Nanxing) ground into powder, mixed with natural ginger juice to form a paste, applied to the fontanelle for cure. Alternatively, use Aconite Lateral Root Preparatum (Caowu) and Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Zaojiao) ground into powder, mixed with scallion juice to form a paste, applied to the fontanelle, which is also excellent.
Infants occasionally suffer from cold-heat imbalance, making their delicate skin and pores prone to catching cold and fever. Medication is not necessary; instead, while the infant sleeps soundly, cover them with a single quilt in summer or a cotton quilt in winter, covering the head loosely without blocking the nose. Ensure the temperature is slightly warm so that the breath passes through this warm air. After a short while, slight sweating will occur. Ensure the warmth penetrates slightly up and down, allowing the exterior and interior to communicate, and the fever will naturally subside. In cold weather when bedding is chilly and sweat is hard to induce, gently hold the infant close, skin-to-skin contact, while covering the face. This method guarantees sweating. It is a highly effective method, hitting the mark every time. If the cold pathogen is severe, inducing slight sweating two or three times will ensure recovery. Performing this method during the Yin hour facilitates easier sweating and faster results.
There are three acute conditions in newborns: one is Jingjin (Jaw Lock), one is Umbilical Wind (Qifeng), and one is Suokou (Mouth Pinching). Although named differently, they belong to the same category of disease and are all acute conditions. Jingjin is particularly severe; infants may escape this condition after four months, but caution is needed within the first hundred days. Severe cases are often untreatable.
Jingjin (Jaw Lock): Also known as Jingfeng. The eyes are closed, the jaw is locked preventing suckling, the cry sounds like a duck, or there are flesh growths on the tongue resembling millet grains. Urination and defecation are normal. However, the face is red, crying frequently, and no white foam is spat from the mouth, distinguishing it from Suokou.
Suokou (Mouth Pinching): The lips are pinched together and cannot open, the eyes appear blue-yellow, there is no cry, breathing is rapid, white foam is spat from the mouth, the tongue is stiff, lips are cyanotic, the mouth and face are pinched, limbs are cold, and these cases are generally incurable. Abdominal distension, visible green veins, intestinal prolapse, or hernia, and internal qi extension are all caused by blockage in the intestines and stomach.
Qifeng (Umbilical Wind): Characterized by umbilical swelling and abdominal distension, rigid limbs, crying without suckling, and convulsions in severe cases. If the area around the umbilicus turns blue-black, hands are clenched, and the jaw is locked, it is untreatable.
Note: The above three conditions are not only caused by water-dampness and wind-cold invading at the time of umbilical cord cutting, but also often due to heat accumulated in the womb, stimulated by wind pathogens, leading to stagnation of internal qi. Infants in the womb have fluid toxins in their mouths, known as fetal toxin. It is essential to prepare silk cotton wrapped around a finger to clean the turbid matter from the mouth before the infant cries upon birth, to clear the zang-fu organs. However, during the haste of childbirth, this is often neglected. By the time the infant cries and cleaning is attempted, the toxin has already been swallowed. Therefore, speed and preparation are crucial. If these three acute conditions occur, they are mostly incurable. At this stage, one should not hesitate or shrink back, nor be lenient and cause delay. Only ancient formulas such as Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill), Dingming Dan (Life-Stabilizing Elixir), and Yinzhu Wan (Silver-Cinnabar Pill) can be used in measured amounts to attempt survival, though even if seen within seven days, recovery is difficult. Therefore, those who cherish their offspring must pay attention to matters before pregnancy, during labor, umbilical cord cutting, and postnatal care.
For any infant within seven days or a month of birth showing symptoms like Qifeng, urgently examine the lower abdomen. There will likely be a single green vein extending to the navel, branching into two forks, and if it reaches the heart, it is incurable. Immediately moxa-burn the ends of the two forks at the tip of the vein with a moxa cone. One application will cause the green vein to retract by about one cun; continue moxa-burning until the green vein disappears completely. The moxa cone should be the size of a red bean or a wheat grain. This method is highly effective.
Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill): Treats conditions where water-dampness and wind-cold invade after umbilical cord cutting, flowing into the umbilicus and affecting the heart and spleen, causing abdominal distension, umbilical swelling, rigid limbs, frequent crying day and night, and inability to suckle. This formula benefits calming tremors and resolving phlegm, and also treats Diaochang (Hooked Intestine) and Suodu (Locked Belly).
