Place crab shells in rice; after a long time, it will not produce insects. Store pears separated by radishes: use whole small radishes or cut large radishes, ensuring the pears do not touch the radishes directly. Store them in bamboo baskets. Avoid wooden containers; this method preserves them for years without spoilage, and has been repeatedly verified.
The preservation method for Citrus medica (Xiangyuan) is the same as for pears. For oranges and tangerines, mix with mung beans for storage to prevent spoilage over time. Wrap them in pine needles for storage so they remain fresh for three to four months without drying out. Use new glazed earthenware jars with lids, placing one fruit per jar, sealing tightly, and storing on an upper floor for longer preservation; this method is excellent.
Placing Ruta graveolens (Yunxiang, also known as Quqili Xiang) in books can repel bookworms. Both leaves and branches are usable. Soak brushes in sulfur water before storing to prevent insect damage. Alternatively, smoke them with Zanthoxylum bungeanum (Chuanjiao).
Ancient wells and wells dug in the fifth lunar month may contain toxins. Those cleaning wells should not enter lightly. First, throw chicken feathers into the well to test: if the feathers sink straight down, there is no toxin; if they float and swirl, there is a toxin. Pour several dou of good vinegar in, and then it is safe to enter.
Mix Huangla (Cera Flava), Songxiang (Pini Resina), Huaihua (Sophorae Flos), and Fushuishui Shi (Lapis Aquae Fluitantis) each weighing one jin, grind them into fine powder, melt them together, and cast candles using wicks made from Juncus effusus (Dengxin). These candles burn at a rate of only one cun per day and night.
One Hu Tao (Juglans regia, also known as Hetao), heated until half-red, buried in hot ashes, will not burn out for three to five days.
For any clothing or bedding that is stained or damaged, always first soak thoroughly in boiling water, then wash according to the following specific prescriptions: For ink stains, wash with rice, or dates, or Juncus effusus (Dengcao); for yellow mud stains, wash with ginger juice; for blood stains, wash with radish soup or urine; for stains from sores, toxins, pus, and blood, wash with Niu Pi Jiao (Colla Corii Asini); for lacquer stains, first wash with oil and rub with water, then wash with chewed apricot kernels; for indigo stains, wash with chewed apricot kernels; for plaster stains, wash with oil, or boiling wine, or Zao Xin Tu (Caulis Longanae); for Areca catechu (Binglang) water stains, wash with white vinegar; for wine, soy sauce, and vinegar stains, wash with lotus root juice; for clear oil stains, wash with honey or radish water; for pig fat stains, wash with chestnuts; for cattle or sheep fat stains, wash with Duanshi (Calcined Alum); for tung oil stains, wash with tofu dregs; for tobacco tar stains (also known as Yan Shi), wash with chewed melon seeds or with rice.
