The affected skin is elevated and deeply depressed, with granules hanging down like "blind eye sores" (a type of ulcer), containing a bluish tint, and each tip exposing a tongue-like projection; this is the honeycomb sore. Apply Hu Yang Yu Long Gao (Cordyceps and Aconite Ointment) and Zhen Jun Miao Tie San (True Lord's Miraculous Powder) (see sections on stubborn carbuncles). External application will surely be effective. If it remains unhealed, apply Xia Ma San (Toad Powder) (see sections on carbuncle toxins). Treat it, or refer to formulas for posterior yin carbuncles for better results.
The sore resembles a cat's eye, has luster, contains no pus or blood, pain and itching are irregular, and appetite decreases; it is named cold sore. Treat it according to the method for blind eye sores mentioned above.
A person suffered from widespread ulceration, resembling leprosy but not leprosy, crying out in pain incessantly. A monk examined him and said: This is Heavenly Snake Poison, not leprosy. Boil Qin Pi (Bark of Phellodendron amurense, also known as Bai Pi, Cao Pi, Shi Tan, Ku Shu, Ku Li) in one dou of water, drink more than ten bowls daily, and recover completely in three days. Another prescription: For sores growing like snakes, several inches long, apply Xiong Huang (Realgar) mixed with sesame oil externally, and internally consume Realgar dissolved in wine, which leads to recovery.
This is Dan Du (Erysipelas, an acute infectious skin disease). It occurs below the waist, one or two inches long, or fragmented like millet grains, or red, swollen, and hard. Burn a lamp at both ends five times each, and use Xiong Huang (Realgar) for both external application and internal consumption; it is extremely effective.
Another formula: Chen Duan Shi (Calcined Iron Oxide), mixed with sesame oil for external application, cures immediately.
Another formula: Burn the bamboo strips binding old toilet buckets into ash, mix with sesame oil for external application; its effect is even faster. Alternatively, treat it according to various formulas for You Feng Dan Du (Wandering Wind Erysipelas).
It mostly grows between muscles and bones, becoming hard, condensed, and painful. Initially white, it gradually grows like a fish spine, breaks open, and flows yellow fluid; this is Zu Zheng (Stubborn Carbuncle). At the initial stage, whether ulcerated or not, apply Ge Suan Jiu Fa (Garlic-Separated Moxibustion) (see general treatment sections for carbuncle toxins) to unblock yang qi. Externally apply Hu Yang Yu Long San (Cordyceps and Aconite Powder) and Zhen Jun Miao Tie San (True Lord's Miraculous Powder) (see previous text).
Narrow and long, swollen and black is this type of sore. It is caused by wind-toxin accumulation, stagnation of qi and blood, or accidental ingestion of human sweat contaminated substances. Burn pig head bones from the twelfth lunar month until charred, grind into powder, mix with raw egg white for topical application; it heals in a few days.
Regardless of location, if the shape resembles a bee's nest, it is a honeycomb sore. Use a jar with a small hole drilled in it, insert several clumps of broken cloth, burn to produce smoke exiting the small hole, and fumigate the affected area; it heals in two or three applications.
Another formula: For recurrences after healing, mix Qian Fen (Lead Carbonate) and Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) with honey for external application; it is miraculous.
