The pulse becomes short and contracted due to internal dryness-heat, accompanied by opisthotonos (backward bending of the body) and spasmodic twitching. This is the natural progression of the disease. Can the patient still tolerate these aromatic-drying and all kinds of highly toxic medicines? I have once applied Zhang Zhongjing's methods for treating diseases to cure conditions commonly known as Ji Jing Feng (Acute Convulsive Disorder) and Man Jing Feng (Chronic Convulsive Disorder), with no case failing to respond immediately to the prescribed formula. I reveal this at the end of this chapter, hoping that those with shared interests will follow it together, thereby saving countless lives. However, Gang Jing (Rigid Spasm) and Rou Jing (Flaccid Spasm), which are what people today call Ji Jing Feng, both belong to Yang syndromes. Their pathological pulses, symptoms, and treatments have been detailed in this chapter. There is another condition, Yin Jing (Yin Spasm), which is commonly referred to as Man Jing Feng. This chapter does not specifically discuss its clauses, formulas, or herbs; perhaps they are scattered throughout the Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage). Now, presumptuously borrowing the principles of the Shanghan Lun, I propose five discussions and adapt four formulas, all of which have been repeatedly tested and proven effective. Those of superior insight must not ignore them on the grounds that I am overstepping or arrogant.
When a disease presents with alternating chills and fever, where chills are accompanied by diarrhea and cold extremities, and fever is accompanied by vomiting, cough, irritability, and palpitations/convulsions, Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum Decoction plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) should be used. If there are no symptoms of Taiyang Bing (Taiyang Disease), and the intake of milk and food remains normal, but only vomiting occurs, with a slightly yellow complexion or greenish-green loose stools, this indicates the impending onset of Yin Jing (Yin Spasm).
