The body emits intense heat, and the stool has already become hard. The skin is red like brocade, which is named "Ban" (macules/petechiae). Do not confuse this with the toxin of measles; foolish doctors often view them identically.
In cases of Ban, blood excess and Qi deficiency prevail. In measles patterns, there is significant depletion of Ying and Blood. During the initial fever of measles, if the skin feels as though spots are appearing, do not treat it as true Ban using cold-natured medicines.
At the onset of measles, the presentation closely resembles Taiyang disease (Shanghan). However, if the middle finger is cold, it indicates a measles pattern. If during fever, the stool is constipated or already hard, and the skin appears red like brocade, this indicates heat lingering in the Stomach, constituting a "Ban" syndrome, not measles. It must not be mistaken for measles, nor should dispersing agents be recklessly used. Using dispersing agents will instead exacerbate the severity. The appropriate formula is Jiawei Renshen Baihu Tang (Modified Ginseng and White Tiger Decoction) [see Article 29], removing Renshen (Ginseng), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Gancao (Licorice), and Jingmi (Rice), and adding Daqing (Indigo Naturalis), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), and Mutong (Akebia Stem). This serves to resolve the macules without hindering the eruption of measles. If the stool remains unsmoothed, Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) can be used to mildly induce purgation. The Ban syndrome is characterized by blood excess and Qi deficiency. Measles, however, involves fire scorching the blood level, leading to significant blood depletion and hyperactive Yang Qi, resulting in these manifestations. If, during fever, the skin feels as though macules are appearing, this is actually not Ban, but Yin Zhen (urticaria/wind rash) formed by wind-cold combined with heat in the exterior. For such patterns, only dispersing agents combined with internal clearing and resolving herbs should be used. Once the measles fully erupts, the Yin Zhen will naturally recede. Carefully avoid mistaking it for true Ban and administering bitter-cold substances such as Zicao (Arnebia Root), Honghua (Safflower), or Shigao (Gypsum), which would cause incessant watery diarrhea, daily decline of Yuan Qi, and inward collapse of measles, rendering it incurable. Keguan Jieji Tang (Pueraria Decoction to Release the Muscles) [see Article 5], removing Chishao (Red Peony Root) and Gancao (Licorice), may be applied. If measles have erupted but are complicated by Ban, Xijiao Honghua Yin (Rhino Horn and Safflower Decoction) is indicated.
Master Zhu stated: Coldness of the middle finger indicates a measles pattern. Ban is contraindicated for dispersing treatments. The distinction between Yin Zhen and Ban is as described above.
