Because the occurrence of diseases in the human body is due to the uneven circulation of the Twelve Meridians (Twelve Primary Channels), if the Qi of Yin and Yang meridians is deficient and attacked by the abnormal pathogenic factors of Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire (Six Evils), the disease enters from the exterior; if harmed by the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensive, Sorrow, Fear, Fright), the disease arises from within. Therefore, all illnesses contracted by the human body are caused by internal or external factors, and since these internal and external causes follow specific principles, physicians can eliminate them by following these principles. Although there are many types of diseases in the human body, making it difficult to determine their exact number, the movement of Yin and Yang within the "Twelve Meridians" only possesses the positive and negative functions of "one ascending and one descending." Throughout history, there have been countless Chinese herbal prescriptions; however, upon entering the human body, the pharmacological effects actually rely on the Zang-Fu Organs (Five Zang and Six Fu Organs) absorbing and transforming the Yin-Yang meridians. This proves that only by mastering the most concise and fundamental mechanism of Yin, Yang, Positive, and Negative in the "Twelve Meridians" can one flexibly respond to and treat all diseases.
Thus, this humble Daoist believes: discovering the fundamental mechanism of Yin, Yang, Positive, and Negative of the "Twelve Meridians" is like discovering the principle of Yin-Yang electricity in the world. Various scientific research fields, using this principle of Yin-Yang current as a guide, can design and develop "scientific instruments" effective for various industries. Based on this humble Daoist's medical research, if each branch of medicine follows the "formula" of this formless and imageless Yin-Yang Positive-Negative mechanism, it may also discover "correct treatment" methods for each branch. According to the good results achieved over more than thirty years using acupuncture, massage, and drug therapy, all guided by the core theory of the "Twelve Meridians," and based on years of clinical practice, this humble Daoist believes the above ideals are achievable. Therefore, determining the "Yin-Yang principles" of the "Twelve Meridians" serves as the "steering wheel and compass" for diagnosing and treating diseases in all branches of medicine.
Chapter 33: Comprehensive Review
Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history and deep roots. The "medical texts" written by physicians throughout history are numerous, each containing unique insights. If gathered together, they would be chaotic and vast as the sea, dazzling those who study Traditional Chinese Medicine. When this humble Daoist first studied medicine, seeing that the medical theories and statements of different schools were quite inconsistent, feeling that following one meant losing another, thus often being confused within the medical path. Later, blessed with a Daoist opportunity, I understood the general outline of the hidden and rare simple Yin-Yang mechanism within the human body. Only then could I understand the uniqueness of each school's theories, which are merely categories divided by the transformation of Yin and Yang phenomena. Therefore, if one grasps the Yin-Yang general outline of the "Twelve Meridians" to observe the details, one can see everything clearly and have firm opinions.
Sages past and present summarized experience and established the Eight Principles (Eight Guidelines) of Cold, Heat, Deficiency, Excess, Yin, Yang, Interior, and Exterior syndrome differentiation as the diagnostic and therapeutic rules of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This author believes: the manifestation of the "Eight Principles" is the branch and leaf expression transformed by the movement of the "Twelve Meridians," which, although capable of playing a diagnostic role in clinical syndrome differentiation, because the physiological and pathological functions of the human body's "Twelve Meridians" are like the "trunk and roots of a tree," one should more understand the Yin-Yang origin principle of this "tree trunk and root" so as not to be confused by the extreme division and deviation of Yin and Yang. Medical doctrine says: "Balancing the Yin and Yang within the human body leads to the cure of disease." If one does not understand the normal Yin-Yang running laws of the human body's "Twelve Meridians," how can one purposefully adjust abnormal Yin-Yang deviations? Therefore, understanding the basic principles of the "Twelve Meridians" is crucial for Traditional Chinese Medicine.
As long as a person has life, the "Twelve Meridians" within their body constantly move without ceasing. Thus, relying on this internal Yin-Yang life-root positive-negative mechanism, one can adapt flexibly to treat hundreds, thousands, and tens of thousands of diseases. *Ling Shu · Jing Mai Pian* states: "The meridians are what can decide life and death, handle hundred diseases, and regulate deficiency and excess." Therefore, I earnestly hope readers will carefully refer to this, formulate prescriptions and methods based on the human body's Yin, Yang, Positive, and Negative mechanisms, thereby drafting symptomatic prescriptions for treating Wind, Phlegm, Qi, Blood, Deficiency, Excess, Cold, Heat, Dampness, and Dryness, or selecting acupoints for acupuncture treatment.
Furthermore, regarding the name of this formless and imageless "Twelve Meridians" structure within the human body: in the classic medical texts *Su Wen* and *Ling Shu*, it is called the "Twelve Meridians"; in modern medicine, it is called the "nervous tissue system." However, the "nervous tissue" mentioned in modern anatomical science is merely the dynamic state of human tissues promoted by the positive and negative operation of the "Twelve Meridians." Because "nervous tissue" is the sensory system in modern medicine, if observed after death, the sentient "Yin-Yang entry-exit spiritual mechanism" has already vanished from the body. The classics say: "When entry and exit cease, the Shen (Spirit) mechanism perishes..." Therefore, one can only see the pathways of the "Twelve Meridians" but cannot see this formless and imageless "Yin-Yang Shen Mechanism." Thus, the route of "nervous tissue" described by modern medicine differs from the "Ling Shu movement" route discussed by ancient sages regarding the "Twelve Meridians." The classics say: "What is referred to as joints/nodes is where Shen-Qi travels in and out, not skin, flesh, sinew, and bone." This indicates that ancient sages particularly valued this formless "traveling in and out" Shen Mechanism within the human body.
However, some newly published traditional Chinese medicine books have deleted much about "the Liver stores Hun (Ethereal Soul)" and "the Lungs store Po (Corporeal Soul)," thereby losing the essence of our motherland's medicine. Hun and Po are synonyms for mental activities within the human body, just like the functional activities of the human body's "Twelve Meridians." Although its image cannot be seen, it has actual energy within the human body.
To illustrate with a simple and clear principle: for example, patients with mental disorders, due to mental confusion, exhibit erratic actions such as joy, anger, sorrow, and fear at times, unable to control themselves. Is this not also a fact of mental abnormality within the human body?
Medical theories must respect facts and cannot be ambiguous in clinical practice. Because the theories of our motherland's medicine are the ancient sages' understanding of the Yin-Yang Way of the universe and nature, combined with the human body's Yin-Yang physiological structure to be identical with the universe, believing that our human body is a microcosm of the universe. Thus, the entire theoretical viewpoint is based on the unity of Heaven and Humanity to summarize the connection between the universe and human physiology, all of which are arguments based on factual principles.
The classics say: "What accompanies Shen and comes and goes is called Hun; what enters and exits with Jing (Essence) is called Po." According to medical theory positioning: The Liver belongs to the East, the Heart belongs to the South. The Southeast direction belongs to Yang and is subordinate to the left side of the human body. Therefore, "the Liver stores Hun, the Heart stores Shen" are synonyms for the mental coming-and-going activities on the left side of the human body. Since the left side of the human body belongs to Yang and governs ascending, anger causes Qi to rise, and joy causes Qi to relax, both resulting from emotional stimulation elevating the spirit. Therefore, excessive joy and anger harm the spirit on the left side of the human body.
The Lung belongs to the West, the Kidney belongs to the North. The Northwest direction belongs to Yin (Note: Text says 'Ming' likely typo for Yin or distinct concept, context implies Yin/Descending) and is subordinate to the right side of the human body. Therefore, "the Lung stores Po, the Kidney stores Jing" are synonyms for the mental entering-and-exiting activities on the right side of the human body. Since the right side of the human body belongs to Yin (context implies Yin/Descending) and governs descending, sorrow causes Qi to dissipate, and fear causes Qi to sink, all resulting from emotional stimulation lowering the spirit. Therefore, excessive fear and sorrow harm the spirit on the right side of the human body. Thus, when a person is in a normal state, it belongs to Hun, Shen, Po, and Jing; in an abnormal state, it transforms into Anger, Joy, Sorrow, Fear, etc. These all evolve from the invisible mental transformations within the human body. Therefore, physicians must understand their origins to use mental theory analysis as a diagnostic basis when clinically treating diseases of mental abnormality. However, when doctors treat diseases, they must value both spirit and matter. Matter relies on spirit for transformation; spirit relies on matter for nourishment. Thus, spirit and matter depend on each other and transform into each other inseparably. In diagnosis and treatment, both must be considered to achieve good effects.
According to the discussion of "Tian Gui arrives" in *Su Wen · Shang Gu Tian Zhen Lun*: Historically, some physicians believed it referred to the "onset of menstruation" when women grow to fourteen years old. Since it was also seen that men also have the theory of "Tian Gui arrives" when growing to sixteen years old, some physicians believed that "Tian Gui arrives" does not completely refer to women's menstruation, leaving only an incomprehensible doubt. Until now, with modern scientific instruments observing the reproductive systems of males and females, we realized that what *Su Wen* said "Tian Gui arrives" refers to females reaching the ovulation period during growth and development; and males reaching the "sperm emission" period during growth and development.
If evolution had not developed to the point of modern scientific instrument observation, this question would remain permanently unexplained. Thus, this is astonishing. Thousands of years ago, technologies such as anatomical experiments were very backward, yet the ancient sages understood the interior of the human body so precisely and thoroughly! Just like this example of "Tian Gui arrives," confirmed without falsehood until today's high-tech era, proving that the ancient sages and philosophers possessed immeasurable great wisdom to compose the *Su Wen* and *Ling Shu* classics of the *Huang Di Nei Jing*.
Furthermore, based on the "Twelve Meridians" mechanism obtained by this humble Daoist, it further proves that there is not a single false word in the works of the ancient sages, all discussing truths that exist factually. If we still do not understand certain principles, we can only say that our research cognition has not yet reached the realm of the ancient sages, and cannot deny it based on personal views. Believing that with the assistance of modern science to assist in research and verification, the medical theories of our motherland will gradually be recognized by humanity, developed, and successfully applied clinically in the near future.
Postscript
This humble Daoist first lived in a remote village, later resided in high mountains and dangerous ridges, isolated from the outside world's medical knowledge. Having neither studied at higher institutions nor possessed modern medical equipment, relying solely on the researched and understood basic principles of the "Twelve Meridians" and simple medical facilities, yet able to cure a portion of "difficult and complicated cases" that were not cured by higher hospitals.
Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. Based on the "Twelve Meridians" theory, this humble Daoist, through "acupuncture treatment," "massage and Tuina treatment," and drug therapy, has all achieved satisfactory curative effects, entirely relying on its positive and negative mechanisms as a guide. Years of clinical practice have proven that determining the positive and negative movement mechanisms of the Three Yin and Three Yang of the human body is the true marrow of the "Twelve Meridians" and also the way to determine the "true energy" of life vitality within the human body. Now contributing this principle, hoping that relevant Traditional Chinese Medicine research units and colleagues interested in researching "Meridian Theory" will use this theoretical understanding as an exploration line for the "Twelve Meridians." Through modern scientific means for verification, develop "exploration and measurement instruments" that conform to the circulatory laws of the human body's Yin and Yang meridians. Furthermore, guided by the positive and negative functional movements of the human body's "Twelve Meridians," develop "Chinese herbal compound injectables" to regulate the Yin-Yang movement of the human body. Thereby deeply excavating and utilizing the precious essence of our motherland's medicine, promoting and expanding our motherland's medicine to benefit humanity. This is the ultimate wish of this humble Daoist.

Since the author only attended primary school, his level is limited, unable to write well, and did not learn drawing. Therefore, he feels regretful that he cannot perfectly express the movement of the "Twelve Meridians" with "schematic diagrams" one by one. Also, due to the placement of "punctuation marks," whether correct or not, it was determined arbitrarily. Thus, errors and shortcomings are inevitable. For any improprieties, I hope everyone will offer corrections.
This manuscript is the result of decades of research effort by this individual. I am grateful to three Traditional Chinese Medicine experts from Shiyan City Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine—Yang Chengyu, Jiang Yingyun, and Liu Jishan—for their valuable suggestions. Special thanks are extended here.
