Laozi stated: "When Qi enters the body, it is called life; when Shen (Spirit) leaves the body, it is called death." Therefore, it is said that life is governed by Shen. When Shen is present, life continues; when Shen departs, life ends prematurely. The so-called "Shen wandering and losing its post" means that although Shen has left its proper position, it has not completely departed from the body, thus one cannot immediately be declared dead. Its governance lies in the three high positions of the head, referred to as Lingzhu (Spirit Master). This refers to Taiyi Dijun (Supreme One Emperor) in the head, known as Niwan Zongshen (Niwan General Spirit); Wuying Jun (Lord Without Splendor) on the left controls the Three Hun (Ethereal Souls); Baiyuan Jun (Lord of White Origin) on the right restrains the Seven Po (Corporeal Souls). Among these, Hun belongs to Yang Shen (Yang Spirit), and Po belongs to Yin Gui (Yin Ghost). If the spirits of the above three masters are absent and leave their positions, death occurs. Now, even if the Five Shen (Five Spirits) lose their posts, there is still a master to guide their return. However, if Shen Guang (Light of Spirit) does not gather, the Yuan Guang (Round Light) will also be deficient, allowing Xie Qi (Evil Qi) to invade. If Shen loses its position, one can know whether the human Shen is flourishing or not.
