The Yellow Emperor asked: I have heard that Heaven is Yang, Earth is Yin; the Sun is Yang, the Moon is Yin. The combination of large and small months totals three hundred and sixty days to form one year, and the human body corresponds to this. Now, the Three Yin and Three Yang meridians do not seem to correspond with Yin and Yang in number. What is the reason for this?
Qibo replied: Yin and Yang, when counted, can extend to ten; when deduced, to a hundred; when counted further, to a thousand; when deduced further, to ten thousand. The magnitude of ten thousand is incalculable, yet its essence remains singular. Heaven covers above, Earth supports below, and all things are born. Those not yet emerging from the earth are said to be in a Yin position, named Yin within Yin; those that have emerged from the earth are said to be in Yin, named Yang within Yin. Yang provides the correct form, while Yin serves as the master of growth. Thus, life arises due to Spring, grows due to Summer, harvests due to Autumn, and stores due to Winter. If these patterns are violated, the Qi of Heaven, Earth, and the Four Seasons will become blocked. The changes of Yin and Yang, as manifested in humans, are also calculable by numbers.
The Emperor said: I wish to hear about the separation and union (Li He) of the Three Yin and Three Yang.
Qibo said: When a sage stands facing South, the front is called Guangming (Broad Brightness), and the back is called Taichong (Great Surge). In the region of Taichong, it is named Shaoyin (Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian). Above Shaoyin is named Taiyang (Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian). The Taiyang meridian originates at Zhiyin (BL67) and terminates at Mingmen (Gate of Life, referring to the eyes), and is named Yang within Yin. In the upper part of the body, it is called Guangming. Below Guangming is named Taiyin (Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian). Before Taiyin is named Yangming (Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian). The Yangming meridian originates at Lidui (ST45) and is named Yang within Yin. On the exterior of Jueyin (Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian) is named Shaoyang (Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian). The Shaoyang meridian originates at Qiaoyin (GB44) and is named Lesser Yang within Yin. Therefore, in the separation and union of the Three Yang meridians, Taiyang acts as the Opening, Yangming as the Closing, and Shaoyang as the Pivot. These three meridians must not deviate from each other; their pulse should be firm but not floating, which is called One Yang.
The Emperor said: I wish to hear about the Three Yin.
Qibo said: The exterior is Yang, the interior is Yin. Thus, the middle is Yin, and its Chong (Surging) vessel is located below, named Taiyin (Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian). The Taiyin meridian originates at Yinbai (SP1) and is named Yin within Yin. Behind Taiyin is named Shaoyin (Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian). The Shaoyin meridian originates at Yongquan (KI1) and is named Lesser Yin within Yin. Before Shaoyin is named Jueyin (Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian). The Jueyin meridian originates at Dadun (LR1). This is the absolute Yang of Yin, named the Absolute Yin of Yin. Therefore, in the separation and union of the Three Yin meridians, Taiyin acts as the Opening, Jueyin as the Closing, and Shaoyin as the Pivot. These three meridians must not deviate from each other; their pulse should be firm but not sunken, which is called One Yin. The Qi of Yin and Yang flows vigorously, accumulating and transmitting in a complete cycle. Qi resides internally, while Form manifests externally, thereby mutually completing each other.
