In treating pediatric illnesses, diagnosis requires perceiving the subtle and profound, as young children suffering from disease often cannot speak for themselves. Some diseases are contracted in utero, while others result from wind-pathogen invasion after birth. The onset of illness is frequent, severe, and varies among different schools of thought; if the selection of acupoints is erroneous, the treatment will be entirely flawed. By consulting various Mingtang (Acupuncture Point Atlases), more than seventy acupoints proven effective for pediatric conditions have been carefully selected. These points have been clinically used with repeated success. They are now compiled and recorded below. (Note: This preface is also recorded in *Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
Pediatric Jing-Xian (Startle Epilepsy): Symptoms begin with startle, palpitations, and crying, followed by the onset of the disease. Moxibustion is applied to the center of the whorl on the vertex of the head, 3 moxa cones. Also to the blue collateral vessels behind the ear, with moxa cones the size of a wheat grain.
Pediatric Feng-Xian (Wind Epilepsy): Symptoms begin with flexing fingers as if counting objects, followed by the onset of the disease. Moxibustion is applied to the depression at the hairline above the nasal bridge, 3 moxa cones, with moxa cones the size of a wheat grain.
Pediatric Huan-Jing-Feng (Lax Convulsive Wind): Moxibustion is applied to Chize (LU-5) on both sides, 1 moxa cone each. Located in the middle of the transverse cubital crease where the artery beats, with moxa cones the size of a wheat grain.
For children aged two or three who suddenly develop redness in both eyes (canthi), moxibustion is applied to the depression one cun and five fen posterior to the web between the thumb and index finger, 3 moxa cones per point, with moxa cones the size of a wheat grain.
For pediatric fontanelle delay (failure of the fontanelle to close), moxibustion is applied to two points, five fen above and five fen below the umbilicus, 3 moxa cones per point. Before the moxa sore develops, the open fontanelle will close. Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain.
For pediatric night crying (crying when lights are lit, stopping at cockcrow), moxibustion is applied to Zhongchong (PC-9), located one fen posterior to the nail bed of the middle finger, 1 moxa cone. Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain.

For pediatric throat rattling and difficulty swallowing milk, moxibustion is applied to Xuanji (CV-15), 3 moxa cones. Located in the depression one cun below Tiantu (CV-22). Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain.
Xian Bing (Epilepsy) is a malignant disease in children. In the brief interval of breathing, there is insufficient time to seek a physician, leading to many deaths. As the proverb says: "If a country lacks good physicians, half of the dead die in vain."
For pediatric Zhu-Xian (Pig Epilepsy), characterized by symptoms similar to Shi-Jue (Corpse-like Coma) and foaming at the mouth, moxibustion is applied to Jueque (CV-14), 3 moxa cones. Located in the depression one cun below Jiutui (CV-15). Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain.
For pediatric sleep-startle with inability to close eyes, moxibustion is applied to the point three fen superior to the midpoint of the transverse cubital crease, 1 moxa cone per side. Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain.

For pediatric oral ulcers with rotting gums and foul odor, moxibustion is applied to Laogong (PC-8) on both hands, 1 moxa cone per point. Located in the center of the palm, identified by placing the tip of the ring finger against the palm. Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain.
For pediatric Ji-Xian (Chicken Epilepsy), characterized by easy startle, body opisthotonos, and arm twitching/shaking, moxibustion is applied to the Hand-Shao-Yin meridian (Shenmen, HT-7), 3 moxa cones. Located in the depression half a cun proximal to the wrist crease. Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain.
For pediatric malaria that persists despite long-term treatment, moxibustion is applied to the depression between the lateral aspects of the great toe and the second toe, 1 moxa cone per point. Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain. This is Neiting (ST-44).
