I commonly use Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) 1–2 g, administered with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction), to treat epidemic spasmodic diseases (seasonal流行 spasm disorders) and pediatric wind-wen (wind-heat epidemic diseases) or early-stage measles complicated by convulsions. If convulsions are severe, Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) 10 g is used, prepared as a decoction for administration. After the fever subsides and consciousness returns, treatment proceeds according to standard protocols, yielding excellent results. Additionally, for coma and orifice obstruction caused by high fever in warm-heat summer-epidemic diseases, if it is confirmed that the condition is due to pathogenic heat sinking inward causing blockage, this method can be applied to both adults and children. I once treated an 18-year-old male student surnamed Wu. Due to intense study during summer exams, he contracted summer-heat. One day, he suddenly developed high fever (Zhuang Re), coma, delirious speech, causing his family great alarm. His signs included a red face, tongue protrusion/manipulation, scanty urination, and rapid pulse. I urgently prescribed Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) 6 g, combined externally with Bohe Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium) 6 g and Chensha Yiyuan San (Cinnabar Yi Yuan Powder) 30 g, mixed with water decoction for oral administration. After one dose, profuse sweating occurred, consciousness was restored, and the illness resolved. This is because the disease involves heat blockage; this method possesses not only the power to clear heat and open the orifices but also acrid-aromatic dispersing and resolving properties.
Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) is a commonly used emergency essential medicine for treating coma and orifice obstruction in warm-heat epidemic diseases. However, its strength in clearing the heart, opening the orifices, resolving phlegm, and detoxifying is inferior to Angong Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis An-gong Pill); whereas its power in cooling the liver, descending fire, extinguishing wind, and stopping spasms is supreme. It should be selected judiciously in clinical practice.
