A wet nurse from the Sun family suffered from a "Fa Bei" (a severe carbuncle on the back). The affected area was hard and significantly swollen, with a base as wide as a bowl. The apex of the sore had many white pustules resembling millet seeds. I said, "This condition is very dangerous and must not be taken lightly." I prescribed several qian of San Jian Xiao Zhong Wan (Pills to Disperse Hardness and Reduce Swelling), instructing her to take five qian daily. The next morning, upon inspection, the hard mass had completely dissipated, and the symptoms seemed to have vanished. I was greatly astonished and said, "The pills I kept should be returned to me. It is not out of stinginess, but because compounding them is difficult." Upon checking the medicine, very little remained; it turned out she had taken it more than ten times within a day and night, consuming twenty to thirty pills each time, thus finishing the entire supply. I remarked, "Fortunately, her constitution is strong; otherwise, this would have caused harm. However, for any toxic swelling that is hard and does not subside, only these pills are invariably effective. Even if pus has already formed, surgical incision is unnecessary, as the poison will naturally discharge through rupture. Healing after ulceration is also easy. Truly, it is a supreme treasure."
The son of Chen Nongzai, west of the West Gate in Ningcheng, was thirteen years old. He had scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck) arranged like beads on the side of his neck. His complexion was pale white, and his pulse was deep, fine, and faint. The initially erupted sore had been ulcerated for over a year; the wound was sunken and white, oozing thick fluid continuously. Subcutaneous nodules were the size of bean shots, half exposed outside the skin and half embedded in the flesh. Other nodules remained hard and unruptured. I said, "The color and pulse both indicate deficiency-cold. Urgent warming and tonification of Qi and Blood are required. If not treated properly, prolonged duration may lead to 'Tong Lao' (pediatric consumptive fever)." Thus, I used Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Decoction to Nourish the Ying) supplemented with Lujiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue). After more than ten doses, the wound gradually became red and vibrant. Since the nodules had not yet subsided, I continued with the previous formula while concurrently administering Dongtian Jiuku Dan (Sky Cave Saving Pain Pill) and Xiaojin Dan (Little Gold Pill), alternating every other day. After more than thirty days of administration, the nodules suppurated and gradually drained. Those unruptured also gradually dissipated. Then, I applied Shengji Mo Yao (Powder to Generate Flesh) containing Renshen Xu (Ginseng Rootlets) and Xiangpi (Leatherback Turtle Shell), covered with Yanghe Jiening Gao (Yanghe Resolving Stasis Plaster), and continued administering decoctions and pills to generate flesh, nourish blood, and strengthen the Spleen. Cured in two months, the patient's constitution became robust thereafter. This is the method of Mr. Wang Hongxu. Physicians of the world often use Jiang Dan (corrosive mercury compounds) to remove nodules, causing unbearable pain, which inevitably leads to failure to cure. Therefore, in treating various sores and ulcers, achieving painlessness is the first and best method. This is the treatment approach for deficiency-cold syndromes. There are many types of scrofula, and their treatments vary. One must pay close attention to clinical presentations in daily practice to ensure accuracy.
