A man surnamed Yu suffered from chest pain radiating to the back. This is what is referred to as Chest Bi (Thoracic Obstruction) in the *Jin Gui Yao Lue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet). He was treated with Gualou Xiebai San (Trichosanthes and Macrostemon Decoction) and recovered. This is a method established by the ancients, belonging to diseases that are easy to treat. However, incompetent physicians, unaware of this, often use aromatic and drying herbs that consume Qi, attempting various treatments, thereby turning an easy condition into a difficult one, causing much harm. Therefore, I have recorded it occasionally.
Three nuns at the Shanshui Lu Caishen Temple in Wushan suffered from Ben Tun (Rushing Pig), where Qi rushed upward into the abdomen, causing severe pain immediately. A hard mass attacked upward from the lower abdomen. They vomited and could not eat. Their bodies were often bent and hunched, unbearable in their suffering. They were given Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Wuyu (Evodia Fruit), Dongyangshen (Tongol Ginseng), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Shaoyao (White Peony Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Fuling (Poria), Xiaohuixiang (Fennel Seed), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Wumei (Mume Fruit), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Chuanlianzi (Szechwan Chinaberry Seed), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), and Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root). Treatment focused on the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin), Jueyin (Terminal Yin), and Yangming (Yang Brightness) meridians. Every morning on an empty stomach, they were instructed to swallow Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill), 3 qian, and moxa was applied to the Zhongwan (CV 12), Shimen (CV 5), and Guanyuan (CV 4) acupoints. The illness then healed. Unfortunately, she had a heavy smoking habit and a weak constitution, exhausting her Jing (Essence) and Blood. Later, in the following year, she suffered from Chunwen (Spring Warmth) sudden collapse and died.
Jin Shaoye, courtesy name Youchang, inside the Shi Medical Bureau in the Back Market Street of Hangzhou, suffered from Huxian Pianzhui (Fox Hernia with unilateral descent). When standing, the testicle descended; when lying down, it retracted into the lower abdomen. The scrotum was red, swollen, and painful. He invited me to diagnose him. The pulse was left Xian Da (Wiry and Large), right Xu Ru (Deficient and Soft). I said: This is due to Damp-Heat stagnation and steaming in the Yangming, and internal whirling of Wind-Wood in the Jueyin, hence this symptom. Both Yangming and Jueyin govern the Zongjin (Major Tendons), and their meridians all circulate through the Yinqi (Genitals) and reach the lower abdomen. Treatment should first employ methods to resolve Dampness and regulate Qi. Following the method of Mr. Chen Xiuyuan, Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) was used with added Muxiang, Chuanlianzi, Juhe (Tangerine Seed), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed), and Xiaohuixiang. After taking three doses, he felt slightly relieved. Moxa was then applied to the Chong and Ren vessels, and he healed.
He Shiquan of the Ying Family Tomb in Ningcheng lived next to Shi Caicheng. Shi Caicheng was my sworn friend. In the winter of the Xin Si year, friends were invited to drink lightly at the restaurant in front of the Ying family tomb, and Shi Caicheng was also present. His son climbed the stairs and said: Mr. He is currently suffering from an acute illness; please come and diagnose him immediately. I accompanied him into his room. Only long sighs were heard. Asking for the cause of the illness, he said himself that at noon he was still well, but around Wei hour (1-3 PM) his lower abdomen became slightly distended and urgent, and by Shen hour (3-5 PM) it suddenly erupted. The scrotum swelled large as a sheng or dou measure, hard as stone, with pain almost unbearable. He vomited and had diarrhea. The pulse was fine and wiry. The penis retracted into the abdomen. There was a hole at the bottom of the scrotum like an umbilicus. He wanted to seek Western medicine to cut it open. I said: Although Westerners have this method, how can one rashly try it? To invite disaster upon oneself. This disease erupts violently and subsides quickly. If you listen to my medication, it can be cured tonight. The family thought it was comforting words and did not believe it deeply. For him, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) was prescribed with added Sheng Fuzi (Raw Aconite Root) 3 qian, Banxia 2 qian, and Wuyu 7 fen. He was advised to rest quietly and nourish himself, without anxiety. After taking the medicine until Xu hour (7-9 PM), vomiting and diarrhea stopped, but the hernia remained as before, and the pain increased. I said this is because Cold Evil is abundant and rejects the hot medicine. The deep-seated pathogen in the Lower Jiao is strong, and the medicinal power is too light to overcome the disease. Another dose is needed to improve. The patient showed difficulty. Fearing his doubt, I invited my classmate, Mr. Wang Yuanzhong, to discuss together. Mr. Wang arrived after Ji hour (5-7 PM) and past the first watch. After diagnosis, his discussion agreed with mine. Thus, Jiaofu Baitong Tang (Pepper and Aconite Bai Tong Decoction) combined with Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) was prescribed, still using Sheng Fuzi 3 qian. Taken at the second watch (9-11 PM). I stayed overnight at Friend Shi's house, fearing that if the condition changed and miscellaneous medicines were indiscriminately used, it might lead to danger. I told his son: If your father's condition changes slightly, come tell me immediately. After the third watch (11 PM-1 AM), his son came to report: Father's illness has improved more than half. I was greatly delighted, took a lamp and went quickly. The patient said: Because I moved while sitting for a long time, I felt as if Qi leaked out, and the distension and pain disappeared instantly. Looking at it, the scrotum had shrunk more than half, and the skin wrinkled. The penis extended halfway. The next day, swelling and hardness completely disappeared, returning to normal. Only spiritual fatigue was felt. Later, due to financial pressure, he recovered without taking medicine. He actually called me Huatuo Reborn.
