Scorpion tail (Buthus martensii Karsch), Verdigris (Cupriacetum) each 5 fen, Cinnabar (Cinnabaris) 1 qian, Calomelas (Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite) 1 qian, and a small amount of Moschus. Grind all ingredients into fine powder together. Take one "yi zi" (approx. 0.3-0.6g) per dose, dissolved in clear winter tea for administration, to expel wind-phlegm via vomiting.
Poria (Poria), roasted Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit (Tsaoko Fructus), Aucklandia Root (Aucklandiae Radix), Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Tangerine Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and prepared Magnolia Bark (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Perilla Seed (Perillae Fructus) in equal parts. Grind all into fine powder. Take 5 fen per dose, administered slowly with decoction of fresh ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Chinese Jujube (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus).
There are cases where heat resides in the chest, causing irregular body extension and flexion, making "eh eh" sounds, with qi distension leading to umbilical protrusion and edema. This is not caused by improper umbilical cord cutting; resolving blood stasis will lead to recovery. The primary formula is Modified Longdan Decoction (Jiajian Longdan Tang).
Gentian Root (Gentianae Radix), Peucedanum Root (Peucedani Radix), Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix), Saposhnikovia Root (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Platycodon Root (Platycodi Radix), Red Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Poria (Poria), Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and baked Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, halved dosage). Decoct in water and administer. Stop medication once bowel movement occurs.
There are also cases of abdominal distension with exposed blue veins, hernia with testicular pain radiating inward, and mouth contraction (cuokou). These are caused by intestinal qi stagnation and blockage. The treatment principle emphasizes unblocking and promoting circulation. Administer Zishuang Pill (Zishuang Wan) according to dosage, or use Yili Jin Dan (One Pill Golden Elixir) which is also excellent.
Calcined Ochre (Dai Zhe Shi, calcined seven times in vinegar), Red Halloysite (Chishi Zhi) each 1 liang, Almond Kernel (Prunus armeniaca L. var. ansa, peeled and core removed) 50 grains, and Croton Seed (Crotonis Tiglii Fructus, husked, cored, and oil removed) 30 grains. First grind almonds and croton seeds into a paste, then mix evenly with the two minerals. Soak in steamed dough balls and form pills the size of millet seeds. Infants under 100 days old take 3 pills; infants aged one year take 5 pills. Adjust based on the infant's robustness or frailty, stopping when thorough purgation is achieved.
For cases where sweat from the umbilicus does not dry, apply a powder made of Dragon Bone (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) 5 fen, Phellodendron Bark (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex) 1 qian, and Calcined Alum (Ku Fan) 2.5 fen externally.
Xijiang Yue:
When infants first fall ill, symptoms vary greatly and are hard to categorize, including fetal convulsion, mouth contraction, and umbilical wind, as well as cold/heat, fat/thin, jaundice, and swelling. Vomiting, lethargy, and refusal to nurse; umbilical bleeding flows continuously. Illness before full moon is often ominous, like a candle flickering in the wind.
Umbilical wind is most feared, bringing disaster between the third and eighth day. Initially, sneezing resembles wind-cold, with frequent noisy crying. Quickly inspect the upper palate of the mouth, scrape away white blisters from the center, carefully observe the expelled foul blood, ensuring it is not swallowed.
If this method is unknown, and blisters fall and are swallowed, sudden abdominal distension and blooming occur, with umbilical swelling and chaotic blue veins. Mouth contraction, lethargy, refusal to nurse, eyes staring, jaw clenching, inability to cry, leading to death. Advise preparing shroud and coffin early.
Fetal jaundice appears golden-yellow, with body heat and difficult defecation, cloudy yellow-red urine, low milk intake, and tongue protrusion. This condition is generally non-toxic, caused by damp-heat attacking the spleen and stomach. Use cooling methods to calm fright and cool blood layer by layer. Preserve fetal origin while applying this.
Additionally, there are fetal obesity and fetal emaciation, resulting from constitutional deficiency or excess. Deficiency in father's essence and mother's blood leads to insufficient yuan qi in the child. This is very difficult to regulate; ignorant people fail to support it. Once illness strikes, danger ensues, costing life.
Frequent spitting up of milk after birth, lack of appetite, and lethargy are due to swallowing impurities because cleaning was incomplete. Obstruction in the throat, coagulation at the entrance of the Tai Cang (stomach). Phlegm-resolving and qi-smoothing medicines work miraculously; use processed fresh ginger as an guide.
Sudden abdominal distension after birth, dripping umbilical blood, results from improper post-cutting care allowing external pathogenic water and wind to invade. Externally apply alum ash paste to dry quickly; this is effective. If mouth contraction and weak crying persist, even spiritual elixirs cannot cure.
Infants crying in sleep within days of birth are often startled due to maternal emotional imbalance. Often caused by the Seven Emotions, leading to rebellious qi in the fetal sac, with phlegm-saliva flowing into the spleen and heart. Treatment requires smoothing qi and clearing spirit, settling phlegm-saliva to stabilize.
Fetal heat makes the body feel like fire, with macules, erysipelas, wind sores, lethargy, abdominal pain, fright, difficulty in urination and defecation, and loud crying. This is due to the mother consuming fried/spicy foods and using incorrect warming meridians/warming medicine prescriptions. Urgently detoxify and cool; Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix) are superior.
Fetal cold presents with vomiting and diarrhea from birth, slippery clear stools, frequent painful crying, and fluctuating green-yellow complexion. Due to the mother's preference for raw/cold foods, cold pathogens enter the conception vessel. Treatment should use pills/powders with sweet-warm properties to preserve the infant's life.
To understand pediatric treatment is to be a specialist. Between half a week and one year, causes are often solely fetal toxin manifestations. Later, as diet decreases, changes in rich/greasy food must be understood. Spleen/stomach diseases are common here; define laws for digesting food and nourishing the spleen.
For fetal disease requiring cooling resolution, nothing beats Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix). If spleen weakness complicates the disease, Ginseng Root (Panax ginseng C.A.Mey.), Atractylodes Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Tangerine Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) are effective. Croton Seed (Crotonis Tiglii Fructus), Morning Glory Seed (Pharbitidis Semen), Clove (Caryophylli Flos), and Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus), along with Arsenic Trioxide (Arsenicum Trioxidum), Sulfur (Sulfur), White Mercury (Hydrargyrum), and Litharge (Lithargyrum), all damage righteous qi and harm true yuan. Misuse shortens the child's life.
