Xijiang Yue:
Children's eye diseases are mostly caused by self-consumption of sour and sweet foods, generating pathogenic heat in the zang organs that scorches the Liver, rushing to the eyes causing harm. It may present as redness, swelling, itching, and pain, or excessive discharge and tearing obscuring the eyelids. Severe cases involve nebula covering the pupil, or blindness and trachoma-like conditions.
The anatomy of the eye should be understood: each Zang organ corresponds to a specific part. The black pupil belongs to the Liver, the white sclera to the Lung, and the pupil again to Kidney Water. Although the inner and outer canthi differ, Heart Fire belongs to them. What about the upper and lower eyelids? Spleen Earth is located centrally.
If redness is seen inside the eye, it indicates accumulated heat in the Heart Meridian rushing upward. Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder) added with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), or Xixin Dan (Wash Heart Pill) can be used. If yellow color appears, this is due to Spleen Heat steaming and attacking. Xiehuang San (Drain Yellow Powder) has miraculous efficacy; this formula also treats edema.
For pediatric eye redness and pain, topical drops are difficult to use for treatment. Only internal decoctions should be used to unblock internally, while external applications relieve pain. The decoction uses Xixin Gan San (Wash Heart and Liver Powder); the application uses Freshwater Snail flesh. Grind these two ingredients together thoroughly, spread on paper, apply, and do not move it.
If eye drops are needed, do not recklessly use irritating medicines. Only grind Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) finely, soak a large freshwater snail in water, insert the powder into the snail shell. After a moment, yellow fluid flows out. Dip in water and instill into the eyes. Heat recedes, coolness generates, and pain stops.
Eye pain due to Wind-Heat in the Liver Meridian: Xiegan San (Drain Liver Powder) is an immortal formula. Externally, wash the eyes with milk for coolness; do not recklessly use eye drops. For long-standing eye disease with white membrane formation, analyze carefully as a Liver Deficiency syndrome. When deficient, tonify the mother using Dihuang (Rehmannia Root); nourishing Blood and Essence is the superior approach.
