Palpitations (a syndrome characterized by a subjective sensation of violent heart beating and frightful uneasiness) occur because the Heart lacks blood nourishment, resembling a fish without water; the mind feels terrified and trembling with palpitations, appearing as if one is about to be captured. If palpitations are triggered by overthinking, this indicates Blood deficiency.
Siyu Anshen Tang (Four-Substance Calming Spirit Decoction) treats palpitations caused by the Heart lacking blood nourishment. It is recommended to take Chensha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Calming Spirit Pill) concurrently.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine) Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, stir-fried with wine) Shengdihuang (Rhizoma Rehmanniae Recens, washed with wine) Shudihuang (Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparata) Renshen (Radix Ginseng, rhizome removed) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, rhizome removed) Fushen (Poria cum Radice Pinelli, peel and woody part removed) Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, stir-fried) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, stir-fried with ginger juice) Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, core removed) Zhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam) Chensha (Cinnabaris, ground into powder, mixed into the decoction before administration) Wumei (Fructus Mume, one piece)
The above herbs are coarsely crushed for one dose. Add two Jujubes (Fructus Jujubae) and a pinch of stir-fried rice. Decoct in water and administer well after meals.
If the heart palpitations cease intermittently, this is due to Phlegm stirred by Fire. Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) treats palpitations caused by Phlegm-Fire disturbance (see formula under Phlegm Syndromes). To this base formula, add Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Zhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam), stir-fried Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), stir-fried Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chensha (Cinnabaris), Wumei (Fructus Mume), Zhuli (Bambusa Sap), three slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and one Jujube (Fructus Jujubae). Palpitations accompanied by mental confusion indicate Blood deficiency with internal stirring of Fire.
