Pulse: A deficient and wiry pulse indicates fright (Jing) and wind epilepsy (Feng Xian).
Epilepsy (Xian Bing) is characterized by sudden collapse, limpness of the body, teeth grinding, foaming at the mouth, followed by loss of consciousness, and subsequent recovery. There are five types: sheep epilepsy (Yang Xian), pig epilepsy (Zhu Xian), cow epilepsy (Niu Xian), horse epilepsy (Ma Xian), and dog epilepsy (Quan Xian). All are caused by fright, wind, heat, and phlegm (Tan), and are treated with modifications of Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) combined with An Shen Wan (Calming the Spirit Pill). Mania (Dian Bing) is characterized by wild shouting, running about, and not recognizing people; its primary pathogenesis is phlegm, so treatment focuses on resolving phlegm using modifications of Er Chen Tang.
Various forms of epilepsy are due to the accumulation and obstruction of phlegm-fluids (Tan Xian).
Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction): Treats all types of epilepsy.
Fu Ling (Poria), prepared Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) (each 1 qian); Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), bran-fried Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit), Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) (each 1 qian); Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (0.3 qian); Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root) (0.5 qian, powdered); Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (0.5 qian, powdered).
Decoct one dose with three slices of fresh ginger in water. Before administration, add Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) and Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), grind Mu Xiang, mix with Chen Sha powder, and take orally.
When epilepsy is due to deficiency of Qi and Blood accompanied by phlegm-fire, both attacking and tonifying methods should be employed simultaneously.

A one-year-old child fell from a table, recovered after a long time, and developed convulsions with foaming at the mouth. After taking medicines for calming fright and transforming phlegm, symptoms recurred upon fright. After marriage, attacks became frequent and difficult to cure. The child had deficient form and Qi, sallow complexion, and was cured by taking Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction) and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) (formulas see Tonification section).
Wang Dacan’s stepson, aged eighteen, suffered from epilepsy. Each attack involved falling to the ground, foaming at the mouth, and loss of consciousness, recovering after a short while. Attacks occurred once a month or four to five times every two months. Seven years of medical treatment were ineffective. I diagnosed slippery and rapid pulses in all six positions, and a tight, full Ren Ying (Carotid) pulse, indicating Qi and Blood deficiency with wind-phlegm obstruction. I prescribed Zhui Feng Qu Tan Wan added with Ren Shen, Dang Gui, and Huang Lian (each 1 liang), combined with An Shen Wan. Taking both medicines, he recovered in less than half a year. Several subsequent patients were treated similarly and all recovered.
A fifteen-year-old boy contracted epilepsy after sexual intercourse, excessive labor, and failure in examinations, suffering for three years. Attacks were triggered by fatigue. He was treated with Shi Quan Da Bu Tang and Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction), along with Zi He Che (Human Placenta) raw-ground into paste, mixed with steamed glutinous rice flour to make pills size of Sophora seeds. Take 100 pills each time, three to five times daily, resulting in recovery. Later, he suffered from spermatorrhea, night sweats, and fever, which were also cured with the previous medicines plus Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). This formula is effective for treating epilepsy regardless of gender or age.
