于大肠,得之食果;蜂漏根于脾,得之饮流水有蜂毒;蚍蜉漏根于肾,得之食中有蚍蜉毒;
Jiu Lou (Nine Types of Scrofula) and Xing Zhen (Formative Rashes) are all manifestations of Luoli (Scrofula), occurring between the neck and axilla, with episodes of chills and fever; their root lies in the Zang-Fu organs. The *Qianjin Fang* describes them as "Jiu Lou," while the *Bielu* lists even more names. Yelang Lou (Wild Wolf Scrofula) roots in the Liver, caused by worry and anger; Shu Lou (Rat Scrofula) roots in the Stomach, caused by ingesting rat toxins; Loutu Lou (Mole Cricket Scrofula) roots in the Large Intestine, caused by eating fruit; Feng Lou (Bee Scrofula) roots in the Spleen, caused by drinking flowing water containing bee toxins; Pifu Lou (Ant Scrofula) roots in the Kidney, caused by food containing ant toxins; Qicao Lou (Mealworm Scrofula) roots in the Heart, caused by joy, anger, or weeping; Fuqu Lou (Floating Maggot Scrofula) roots in the Gallbladder, caused by excessive rumination; Luoli Lou (Scrofula Scrofula) roots in the Kidney, caused by washing hair when it is new; Zhuanmai Lou (Turning Pulse Scrofula) roots in the Small Intestine, caused by being startled while lying down with an improper pillow. These etiological syndromes have unclear textual meanings, and their origins are unknown. If compared by logical principles, anger roots in the Liver, rat toxins in the Stomach, eating fruits in the Large Intestine, and bee water in the Spleen, which are relatively easy to understand. However, Zhuanmai is due to being startled, so its root should be in the Gallbladder, yet it is stated to be in the Small Intestine; Fuqu is due to rumination, so its root should be in the Spleen, yet it is stated to be in the Gallbladder; Luoli is due to washing hair, which also should not root in the Kidney. The nomenclature is inconsistent and difficult to verify. Furthermore, weeping leading to the name Qicao, and rumination leading to the name Fuqu, is particularly incomprehensible. Additionally, there are Feng Lou (Wind Scrofula), Leng Lou (Cold Scrofula), Xie Lou (Scorpion Scrofula), Yi Lou (Ant Scrofula), Qiángláng Lou (Dung Beetle Scrofula), Qiūyǐn Lou (Earthworm Scrofula), and Xiāmā Lou (Toad Scrofula), with various names and shapes, likely named according to folk customs based on appearance, making verification difficult. The treatment method involves observing cases where the pathogen has not yet penetrated the muscles but manifests externally as pus and blood. By guiding from the root to the branch, the condition can be reduced. Acupuncture, moxibustion, topical applications, and horn therapy can be used to vent and unblock the affected Zang organ according to the cause, following established methods. The *Qianjin Fang* also provides a method for determining life and death: turning the eyes to observe the interior, if red vessels run vertically through the pupil, one vessel indicates death in one year; one and a half vessels indicate death in one and a half years; two vessels indicate death in two years; three vessels indicate death in three years. If red vessels do not penetrate the pupil, it is treatable. Although such theories exist, clinical verification shows few such cases, making them difficult to verify. This typically occurs when the Three Yang meridians transmit pathogens to the Yin meridians; if the disease originates in the primary Zang organ, such signs may not appear. Students should be aware of this.
