Fan Dan (Alum Pill) also treats mania (Kuang). (Formula see Epilepsy Section)
All cases of Yang Toxin from Cold Damage, and accumulated blood stasis, can cause mania; refer to respective sections for details.
The term "Heart Pain" (Xin Tong) is referred to as "Nine Kinds of Pain" (Jiu Tong) in formula treatises, and as "General Pain" (Ju Tong) or "Sudden Pain" (Cu Tong) in the *Nei Jing*. Although variously named, because the pain is located in the Zhong Wan region, it is collectively called Heart Pain, though it is not actually pain of the Heart organ itself. If it is True Heart Pain (Zhen Xin Tong), hands and feet turn blue up to the joints; if severe, death occurs on the same day (morning onset leads to evening death, evening onset leads to morning death), which is beyond the scope of treatment. The formulas recorded here actually pertain to the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin. If the twelve meridians are affected by external pathogenic factors (Six Evils), Qi becomes obstructed and stagnates in the Middle Jiao, Qi struggles with pathogens, causing pain; this belongs to External Causes. If internal movement of the five zang organs is stirred by Seven Emotions, Qi becomes blocked and knots, gathering in Zhong Wan, Qi and Blood clash, causing pain; this belongs to Internal Causes. Improper diet and labor, or violating taboos, cause disharmony of Zang Qi, blockage in the middle, food and drink stagnate and disrupt the intestines and stomach, causing pain; this belongs to Neither-Internal-Nor-External Causes. Treatment should carefully distinguish the Three Causes, resolve obstruction centrally, break accumulations, and dissolve hardness, treating according to the specific cause without confusion. Based on classics, all syndromes are recorded to prepare treatment methods.
