The position one *fen* anterior to the Guan pulse on the left hand is called Renying (Human Welcome), and the position one *fen* anterior to the Guan pulse on the right hand is called Qikou (Qi Mouth). The *Mai Jing* (Classic of Pulse Diagnosis) states: "A tight and full Renying pulse indicates injury from wind-cold; a tight and full Qikou pulse indicates injury from dietary indiscretion." This anterior one *fen* position corresponds to the Cun (Inch) positions of both hands. The left Cun originally serves to inspect the Heart, yet the Heart is not the primary site for wind-cold invasion, yet a tight and full pulse here is interpreted as injury from wind-cold; the right Cun originally serves to inspect the Lung, yet the Lung is not the storage area for food, yet a tight and full pulse here is interpreted as injury from diet. After repeated contemplation, I could not find an explanation. Now, through understanding the operation of heaven and earth, I comprehend it. Heaven rotates to the left; wind-cold is the pathogen of heaven. When Renying encounters this pathogen and disease arises, the oppressive aura of the pathogen causes aversion to wind and cold, which also manifests in the upper part of the left side. Earth does not rotate; the Qi of earth rotates to the right, and the Qi of the human body also begins from the right. Therefore, the upper part of the right side is not named Cun Kou (Cun Mouth) but Qikou. Each section is divided into three levels: Heaven, Earth, and Human. The Earth level of the upper section belongs to the Yangming Stomach Meridian, which governs the digestion and assimilation of the five grains; thus, internal injury from diet first manifests in the upper part of the right side. From the perspective of its original anatomical location, it refers to the Heart and Lung; from the perspective of pathogen reception, it is referred to as Renying and Qikou.
The two hands of a person are the sites where pulses are felt, but one should not know that the two feet are even more the root for establishing pulse diagnosis. The Chongyang artery is located in the depression five *cun* above the dorsum of the foot, belonging to the Yangming Stomach Meridian; the Taichong artery is located in the depression three *cun* posterior to the proximal interphalangeal joint of the great toe, belonging to the Jueyin Liver Meridian; the Taixi artery is located between the calcaneus behind the malleolus, belonging to the Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. When a disease is critical and the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions of the wrist are undetectable, one must examine these three arteries. If the pulse comes and goes evenly, there is still a path to survival. Observe children aged two or three who prefer walking barefoot, those aged eight who prefer running, and those aged ten who prefer walking fast; this is because Yang Qi generates from below. By age fifty, one gradually fears cold; by age sixty, walking becomes difficult; this is because Yang Qi is consumed from below. If there is no pulse in the two feet, even if the two hands are normal, life cannot be sustained long; if there is no pulse in the two hands but there is a pulse in the two feet, with appropriate regulation and treatment, vital energy can still be restored. With a mind ready to adapt to changes, widely disseminate the benevolence of saving the masses; as all phenomena return to spring, truly embodying the virtue of cherishing life.
