While in the womb, the infant has noxious substances in the mouth. Upon birth, if not attended to immediately, the cry will not emerge. Quickly use a soft cloth or cotton-wrapped finger dipped in Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Gancao (Licorice Root) juice to wipe away the noxious fluids from the mouth. Once slightly stabilized, mix a small amount of honey with Zhusha (Cinnabar) powder (approximately one "zi" measure), apply it into the mouth to calm the Heart and Spirit (Shen), detoxify the noxious substances, and prevent the child from suffering from sores and pox for life. Pregnant women should be aware of this method before the month of delivery!
If an infant is born dead, this method can revive them. Immediately examine the infant's mouth for vesicles on the uvula (Xuanyong) and palate. Puncture them with a finger and wipe away the blood until clean. If blood enters the throat, it is incurable.
For a newborn with faint breath unable to cry, it is likely due to difficult labor or exposure to cold. Quickly wrap the infant in cotton wool and hold them close to your body. Do not cut the umbilical cord yet; instead, place the placenta in a charcoal stove to burn. Make large paper twists, dip them in clear oil, light them, and cauterize the umbilical cord by passing the flame back and forth along it, covering the navel area so that the fire's qi enters the abdomen through the navel. Then wash the umbilical cord with hot vinegar water. After a moment, the breath returns, and the infant cries normally as usual. Only then may they be bathed; after bathing, cut the umbilical cord.
For a newborn with inability to urinate or defecate and severe abdominal distension: Urgently have a woman rinse her mouth with warm water, then perform suction/massage on seven areas of the infant: the anterior chest, posterior chest, and below the navel. Perform each area three to five times, rinsing the mouth before each suction, until the skin turns red. The bowels and bladder will open naturally shortly. Otherwise, there is no hope of life. Encountering this condition and using this method can be considered a second birth.
To treat nasal congestion caused by wind exposure at birth, which does not resolve with medication: Use Nan Tian Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile) ground into powder, mixed with fresh Ginger juice, or applied as a paste to the fontanelle (Liu). The illness will be eliminated.
To treat infants born without skin, showing only red flesh: Quickly dust with dry white rice flour, stopping only when new skin forms.
Also to treat infants whose bodies resemble fish bladders or crystal, leaking fluid when broken: Grind Miduo Seng (Litharge), sieve it through silk gauze, and apply dry powder to the affected areas. Also administer Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill). (See section on Middle Qi disorders.)
Also to treat "Kidney Retraction" occurring seven days after birth, caused by cold exposure at birth: Mix equal parts of Liu Huang (Sulfur) and Zhuyu (Cornus Fruit) into powder, blend with garlic paste, and apply to the abdomen. Moxibustion/fumigation with Shechuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit) over mild heat should also be performed.
