Guizhi Gualougen Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Trichosanthes Root Decoction)
Treats wind-strike where sweating or purgation fails to resolve the condition, with pathogenic factors stagnating in the meridians. The qi rebels and forces blood out, resulting in the discharge of clear blood. Or, if the upper orifices are blocked, blood flows into the stomach tube; encountering cold causes it to congeal, resulting in dark,瘀血 (stasis blood).
Ingredients: Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), Baishao Yao (White Peony Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root).
Equal parts of the above ingredients are crushed into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decocted with 1.5 sheng of water, 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and 1 Zao (Jujube). Take warm. If headache is present, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction)
Treats adults and children whose intestines and stomach are invaded by wind-cold due to deficiency, leading to indigestion of food and fluids, and profuse watery diarrhea. It also treats damp-toxin in the intestines and stomach, where stool resembles bean dregs mixed with stasis blood, occurring incessantly day and night. (See formula under Diarrhea category.)
Mahuang Shengma Tang (Ephedra and Cimicifuga Decoction)
Treats febrile disease with fever, where exterior-releasing methods fail to resolve the pathogen. Blood follows the rebellious qi and overflows, known in the world as "red sweat."
Ingredients: Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1 liang 1 fen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum [dose missing]), Fuling (Poria). All equal to 1 liang.
The above ingredients are crushed into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decocted with 1 sheng of water and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Take hot to induce slight sweating for resolution.
Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction)
Treats febrile disease and warm-pathogen diseases where sweating should have been induced but was not, causing internal accumulation and formation of stasis blood. It also treats incomplete epistaxis or hematemesis, where residual blood remains stagnant, leading to black stools.
Ingredients: Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 8 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 3 liang), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, 2 liang).
The above ingredients are crushed into a powder and decocted in water. For patients with mania, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang). If the pulse is large but slow upon arrival, and the abdomen is not distended yet the patient complains of fullness, this indicates absence of excess heat, [and thus certain harsh purgatives may be contraindicated or adjusted].
Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction)
Treats the same conditions as above. (See formula under Febrile Disease category.)
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria)
Treats latent summerheat from excessive drinking of hot fluids, where summerheat qi enters the meridians, becomes congested, overflows, and causes epistaxis. Or, due to deficiency of Stomach qi, blood渗 into the stomach, remains stagnant, and is vomited up. To treat epistaxis, administer the powder mixed with decoction of Maohua (Miscanthus Flower). Repeated use yields good results.
Pipaye San (Loquat Leaf Powder)
Treats the same conditions as above. (See formula under Summerheat Injury category.)
Chushi Tang (Dampness-Expelling Decoction)
Treats exposure to rain and dampness, where dampness stagnates in the meridians, causing blood to overflow and result in epistaxis. Or, due to disharmony of the Spleen, dampness adheres to the meridians, flows into the Stomach, and causes hematemesis.
Ingredients: Fuling (Poria, 2 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 2 liang), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang each).
The above ingredients are crushed into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decocted in water. If headache is present, add Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 2 qian). This formula is most effective for treating epistaxis caused by bathing in a steam bath.
