To treat menorrhagia (heavy uterine bleeding) and metrorrhagia (irregular uterine bleeding) that occurs suddenly after menstruation has ceased for many years, accompanied by abdominal pain and alternating chills and fever, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Hong Zao (Jujubae Fructus). Use Shu Fu Wan (Prepared Aconite Pill). (The formula for Si Wu Tang is seen in the preceding text.)
Da Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chi Shi Zhi (Halloysit Rubra), Bai Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba [de-jointed]), Shu Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) [each in equal parts].
Grind the above herbs into powder, mix with vinegar and rice paste to make pills, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Take 50 pills each time, swallowed with rice water, until the condition gradually improves.
To treat persistent metrorrhagia caused by heat in the menstrual blood, accompanied by a bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, and irregular menstruation, this formula is suitable.
Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Qu Mai Sui (Dianthi Herba), Chuan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix) [each 1 liang], Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [2 liang], Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Wei Ling Xian (Saposhnikoviae Radix).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 2 qian each time, decoct with one sheng of water and three slices of ginger, take warm before meals, two to three times daily.
Various medicines used to treat metrorrhagia and lower bleeding mostly employ hemostatic and blood-nourishing agents. This condition belongs to "Yang invading Yin" (excess Yang pathogen invading Yin blood), as described previously: when heaven is hot and earth is warm, the menstrual waters boil over.
Use Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) in any amount, grind into powder, and mix with wine quenched by a red-hot weight.
Another prescription:
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) [each 1 qian], Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [3 qian, remove hairs].
Decoct the above in four sheng of water until half remains, strain, add five qian of fried Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla) powder, decoct again slightly, take warm in three divided doses on an empty stomach. If abdominal pain occurs, add Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus).
Another prescription: To treat chronic severe uterine bleeding, cured after one dose.
Take tender Cao Xue Jie (Dragon's Blood from Daemonorops draco or related species), steam it, marinate with salt, oil, and ginger, eat it, and swallow with a small amount of wine. Alternatively, collect it, grind into powder, and take mixed with ginger wine. Cao Xue Jie grows in brick crevices or at wellheads.
To treat persistent severe uterine bleeding.
Seven Yan Mei (Salted Plums), burn to ash, grind into powder, take on an empty stomach with rice water.
Another prescription: Chen Huai Hua (Sophorae Flos aged), one liang; Bai Cao Shuang (Soot from kitchen chimney), half a liang, grind into powder, take with wine quenched by a red-hot weight.
To treat metrorrhagia accompanied by leukorrhea.
Da Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) [one liang, decoct with vinegar], Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis) [two liang, stir-fry until red], Wu Mei (Mume Fructus) [half a liang, remove pits], Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) [half a liang].
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 2 qian each time on an empty stomach with rice water; bleeding stops after two doses.
