[Background Information]
Book Title: Shiyi De Xiao Fang (Effectiveness Achieved by Generations of Physicians) Author: Wei Yilin Dynasty: Tianli Era, Year 1 Chapter: Preface by Chen Zhi, Official Medical Director of Jianning Road / Decree from Jiangxi Official Medical Tiju Si to the Imperial Medical Academy Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
Mr. Da Zhai Wei's *Shiyi De Xiao Fang* (Effectiveness Achieved by Generations of Physicians) is likely based on secret family transmissions passed down through generations until the present day. It compiles all treatments that have been experienced and verified as effective, imitating the classification categories of the thirteen departments found in the *Shengji Zonglu* (General Records of Holy Relief). The content is categorized and compiled into twelve fascicles and submitted to the Official Medical Tiju Si (Official Medical Bureau) of this circuit. Mr. Wei's family has resided for generations in Nanfeng, Jiangxi, and he was appointed as the Professor of Medicine at the local prefecture school; thus, his dedication was indeed diligent. In the year Renwu, Mr. Wei passed through my place of book printing (or collection), and I had the honor of bowing to him as a teacher. He also entrusted me with the complete set. Alas! A thousand formulas are easy to obtain, but one effective formula is hard to seek. Observing this work, we can see that Mr. Wei's family received the true transmission and guarded their learning through generations. Their applications were invariably effective, and diseases were invariably cured. Naming the work "De Xiao" (Achieving Effectiveness) is as inevitable as a shadow following a form or an echo following a sound. The merit of saving lives—how could it possibly have limits? How could I dare to keep it private? Therefore, I ordered craftsmen to carve the blocks for printing, so that it might be widely disseminated.
In the third year of Zhizheng, in the year Guiwei, during mid-summer, Chen Zhi, Official Medical Director of Jianning Road, kowtows and respectfully writes.
Imperial Edict: To the Official Medical Tiju Si of Jiangxi and other regions. On the second day of the tenth month in the third year of Zhiyuan, according to the report submitted by the Nanfeng Prefecture Medical Professor Office, and receiving the correspondence from Gan Zonglu, Academician of this school: We observe that Wei Yilin, former Deputy Official Medical Director of this prefecture, possesses profound Confucian scholarship and extensive knowledge of medical texts. Residing in the Feng region, his family has long been known for producing excellent physicians. Since the first year of the Tianli era, he served as the Academic Recorder of the Prefecture Medical School, later transferring to the position of Deputy Official Medical Director. Utilizing his spare time morning and evening, he examined ancient formulas and incorporated family traditions, compiling them into a single book titled *Shiyi De Xiao Fang*. Arranged systematically according to the names of the thirteen departments promulgated by the Imperial Medical Academy, the formulas and medicines are presented with great clarity, which is truly rare. From this, we can see his intention to save lives is extremely profound, and it is appropriate that his work be recommended and promoted. Now that it is being printed and circulated widely, we hope it will be transmitted permanently to benefit the people. For this reason, we request that documents be prepared and submitted to superior authorities for review and determination of whether it should be implemented. Approved.
During the implementation period, we further received correspondence from Wei Yilin, former Deputy Official Medical Director of Nanfeng Prefecture, stating that he studied Confucian classics in his youth and practiced medicine in his adulthood. His ancestral line migrated from Fuzhou to Nanfeng starting with his great-great-grandfather. His great-grandfather, Yunxian, traveled to Tokyo for study, where he met Jing Mingwei, the twenty-fifth generation descendant of Dong Feng, who taught him the Department of Internal Medicine (Da Fangmai Ke). Upon returning home, his medical practice flourished daily. His grand-uncle, Zimei, advanced the transmission of the Linjiang Liu Sandian department and the Xinicheng County Wulu Chen female disease department in Jianchang Road, as well as the Hangzhou Tianmaqi orthopedic and metal wound department. His grandfather, Biya, further transmitted the Lichuan Dazhou Shi minor prescription department. His uncle, Xi, transmitted the Fujian Tingzhou Lu Chengguang ophthalmology department, while Zhou Houyou of Nancheng County treated phthisis (consumptive diseases). As for myself, Wei Lin, I continued the transmission of the Jinzhu Jiangdongshan carbuncle and swelling department in this prefecture, and the Linchuan Fanchuqing otorhinolaryngology and dentistry department. Accumulating ancient formulas alongside those of modern famous physicians, from my great-grandfather to myself spans five generations. Each trial yielded immediate results. Hereby, not daring to fail the difficult transmission of previous generations, and relying on ancient formulas combined with family traditions, after ten years of arduous effort, I compiled and arranged this book, naming it *Shiyi De Xiao Fang*. It begins with the Department of General Internal Medicine and Miscellaneous Diseases, Minor Prescription Department, Wind Disease Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology including miscellaneous women's diseases, Ophthalmology, Oral/Dental and Throat Department, Orthopedics and Metal Wound Department, Carbuncle and Swelling Department. Acupuncture is briefly attached to each department. Additionally, Sun Simiao’s Health Preservation Book is appended externally. In total, there are twelve fascicles. Feeling ashamed of my rustic origins and limited exposure, leading to many errors, I requested corrections. During this process, I was supported by Gan Xuezhen of the Prefecture Medical School via correspondence to proceed with printing for wide dissemination. Therefore, I now submit the compiled *Shiyi De Xiao Fang*, listing the outlines of formulas for each department, with detailed treatment indications and clear prescriptions, bound into twelve complete fascicles. I kindly request submission to superior authorities for official review. If deemed worthy of adoption, I beg for permission to print and distribute it, to slightly fulfill my heart of saving lives and benefiting the world, truly aligning with the imperial court's virtue of treating all equally. Requested for implementation. Approved.
We note that Deputy Official Medical Director Wei Yilin possesses pure and cautious character, mastering both medicine and Confucianism. The compiled *Shiyi De Xiao Fang* is indeed based on the twelve fascicles issued by the Imperial Medical Academy. These are hereby submitted with a guarantee for careful review and implementation. Received. We note that the Nanfeng Prefecture Medical Professor Office submitted the twelve fascicles of *Shiyi De Xiao Fang* compiled by former Deputy Official Medical Director Wei Yilin, which had not yet been corrected. We commissioned Yu Tiju, an official of this bureau, to correct them clearly without neglecting his official duties, provide a guarantee, and report back for implementation. Subsequently, we received correspondence from Director Yu regarding these matters. Having received the twelve fascicles of *Shiyi De Xiao Fang* compiled by Wei Yilin, Deputy Official Medical Director of Nanfeng Prefecture, containing treatments and prescriptions for various departments, I carefully read and repeatedly examined them. It is evident that Wei Yilin has extensively studied medical classics and deeply understands pulse diagnosis. He correctly distinguishes the roles of Sovereign, Minister, Assistant, and Courier herbs in prescriptions and adapts formulas to the suitability of ancient/modern and northern/southern contexts. His discussions are detailed and clear, and his diagnostic treatments are precise. He indeed harbors the intention to save lives and meets the needs of the current times. However, fearing that my own understanding might contain errors or fail to grasp the ultimate principles, if permitted, I suggest submitting this to the Imperial Medical Academy for re-evaluation and correction by appointed officials before publication, ensuring its permanent transmission. This would benefit the sacred transformation above and relieve the people below. Consequently, I am now returning the corrected twelve fascicles of *Shiyi De Xiao Fang* compiled by Wei Yilin, providing a guarantee and requesting verification and implementation. Approved.
Our subordinate office reviews that Wei Yilin, Deputy Official Medical Director of Nanfeng Prefecture, has profound learning derived from family instruction, excels in pharmacology, and demonstrates clarity in his written works. His ambition is to save lives, and his book should be printed to benefit the world. We worry that Director Yu's reference may not be detailed enough, and corrections may be incomplete. Relying solely on personal views might lead to discrepancies. It is advisable to follow the official's statement, submit to superiors, and commission officials to triple-check and correct. If deemed worthy, it should be carved and printed, manifesting the imperial court's virtue of cherishing life above and honoring the labor of medical compilers below. Therefore, we now submit the twelve fascicles of *Shiyi De Xiao Fang* previously compiled by Wei Yilin, Deputy Official Medical Director of Nanfeng Prefecture, which have been corrected by Director Yu of our bureau. These are sent forward with a guarantee and reply. We earnestly request careful consideration and explicit orders for compliance. Necessary to submit.
Right: Submitted to the Imperial Medical Academy. Copy submitted for circulation on the [Day] of the eleventh month, third year of Zhiyuan.
