The dysentery known today is what ancient formulas called "Zhi Xia" (stagnant downward flow). I have once traced its causes. The Stomach is the Fu organ of the Spleen and serves as the sea of water and grain. If labor is excessive or diet is irregular, damaging the Spleen and Stomach, it often leads to this condition. If one does not first use agents such as Badou (Fructus Crotonis Tiglii) to push out stagnation and expel pathogenic filth, few will avoid becoming mentally exhausted and physically emaciated over time; I have taken this as a warning. For damp-heat pathogens, employ clearing and draining methods to separate and eliminate them. For cases where cold and heat intermingle, use warming and cooling methods to harmonize them. For chronic toxic dysentery resulting from injury, use detoxification methods to protect the healthy Qi. There is no case that does not respond, and no disease that does not heal. Nevertheless, one must observe the deficiency or excess of the pulse. For instance, if the pulse is minute and small during dysentery, there is hope for survival; if the pulse is slippery and large, it indicates [excess/heat requiring differentiation]; if the pulse is wiry and rapid, death is certain. Furthermore, if the body is cold, there is hope for survival; if the body is hot, death is likely. If treatment is guided by these verifications, it will be infallible.
