The nose is the external manifestation of the Lung. Its function should remain harmonious; when harmonious, it can perceive odors. If internal stagnation of the Seven Emotions or external invasion of the Six Excesses occurs, along with dietary irregularities and labor fatigue, the nasal qi fails to circulate smoothly, leading to obstruction of the clear pathways. The resulting diseases include epistaxis, carbuncles, polyps, ulcers, clear rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, turbid purulent discharge, or anosmia. These are all caused by disharmony of the Lung organ, accumulation of pathogenic factors in the nose, and obstruction of the clear pathways. The treatment principles are: warm what is cold, clear what is hot, unblock what is obstructed, and dissipate what is congested; nothing exceeds these principles. However, for epistaxis caused by seasonal pathogens, do not stop bleeding immediately. Only if the volume exceeds three sheng, fearing excessive loss, may hemostasis be attempted. As stated in the *Huoren Shu*, epistaxis resolves spontaneously because Yang Qi is heavy. This must be understood.
Furthermore: The nose is governed by the Lung, responsible for clearing and transforming. When properly regulated, the Lung Qi circulates freely, and the clear pathways remain patent; improper care leads to accumulation of clear qi in the nose, which serves as a key point for treatment preparation.
