And referring to the theories of various schools, it is compiled into a collection. Its origins and details are precise and thorough, with its framework running through everything; it is indeed indispensable for those who differentiate pulse conditions. Furthermore, it innovatively creates the "Nine-Section Pulse Diagram of the Qi Kou" (Qikou Jiudao Mai Tu), eloquently expounding the principles of the *Neijing* (Inner Canon). It details diagnostic methods, particularly elucidating secrets not previously revealed by predecessors. Examining history, Hua Shou of the early Ming Dynasty wrote *Fourteen Meridians Exposition* (*Shisi Jing Fahui*), one volume, adding the Ren (Conception Vessel) and Du (Governing Vessel) meridians to the twelve regular meridians. This was formerly appended to the beginning of Xue Ji's medical cases. (Note: There are two versions of Xue Ji's medical cases; one does not contain this text.) Physicians took it as a standard. Li Shizhen's work in this book is more refined and verified, yet all are based on the *Lingshu* (Spiritual Pivot) and *Suwen* (Basic Questions) to investigate their intricacies and grasp their beginnings. From this, we know that empirical scholarship stems from textual research, progressively deducing and becoming increasingly rigorous; even a single skill is subject to this principle.

Preface by Wang Guoguang: Master Yang Jizhou of Sanqu studied for the civil service examinations in his youth, possessing broad learning and literary talent. However, he faced repeated setbacks in official examinations, so he abandoned that career to practice medicine. Medicine was indeed his family tradition; his grandfather served as an Imperial Physician and passed down true secrets. He compiled and submitted effective prescriptions to the Emperor, who ordered them printed and distributed throughout the realm. The household also possessed many ancient medical manuscripts. Master Yang read these over many years, without ceasing through winter or summer. Suddenly, he attained enlightenment. Worrying that various books did not converge into a unified system, he integrated their core meanings, compared similarities and differences, and personally edited and polished them. All methods of acupuncture, medication, regulation, and care were divided into diagrams and categories, organized into Heaven, Earth, and Human volumes, titled *Secret Essentials*. Indeed, by consulting this book, the Way of Medicine becomes clear as if held in the palm. During the reign of Emperor Shizong, he was appointed as Taizhongbo and selected through special examination to serve in the inner court, achieving notable merit. People suffering from diseases and sores sought his treatment, which yielded immediate results, making his reputation widespread. When officials in the court appreciated Master Yang and investigated the origin of this compilation, the nobles praised him and had it woodblock printed to benefit future learners, requesting a preface from me. I knew long ago that Master Yang abandoned Confucian studies for medicine; now he truly equates the Way of Medicine with the merits of a Chancellor, confirming again that the Confucian Way and the Medical Way are interconnected. With the publication of this book, the Way of Medicine has a compass. Divine understanding lies within people, saving all beings; the benevolence of these nobles is vast and far-reaching. Thus, this preface.
Qi Xian states: *Secret Essentials* is the collected family transmission works of Yang Jishi of Sanqu Jizhou. (See *Zhenjiu Dacheng*)
*[Zhenjiu Dacheng] (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion)*, ten volumes. Extant.
Preface by Zhao Wenbing: Medicine concerns the lives of the people; its way is ancient. I wish famous physicians of old would lead the way in promoting acupuncture and moxibustion. Among the dialogues of Huangdi and Qibo, this discipline is detailed uniquely. Those who master this technique can instantly revive the critically ill, with effects swifter than herbal decoctions. Recently, acupuncture methods have almost been lost, which is truly regrettable. I temporarily served as the Censor-in-Chief of Shanxi during times of turmoil, where petty officials caused harm and the common people suffered like being upside down. Witnessing the hardships of the people, unable to rectify and save them, I became frustrated and depressed, developing Wei-Bi syndrome (flaccidity and numbness). Doctors came in succession, trying pill formulations daily, but none worked. Therefore, in the capital, I invited the famous acupuncturist Yang Jizhou. Upon his arrival, three needle insertions cured me. He then showed me his family secret manual, revealing that techniques have their roots. I intended to have it printed, but feeling that existing works were incomplete, I extensively searched various books, such as *Shenying Jing*, *Gujin Yitong*, *Qiankun Shengyi*, *Yixue Rumen*, *Yijing Guoxiao*, *Zhenjing*, *Zhenju Ying*, *Zhenjiu Jieyao*, and *Xiao'er Anmo*. Anything related to acupuncture and moxibustion was collected. I further examined the *Suwen* and *Nanjing* as the masters. The outlines of acupuncture methods are fully recorded. I also commissioned craftsmen to carve bronze mannequins at the Imperial Medical Bureau, detailing the acupoints, and drawing maps to make them easy for students to browse and understand. I worry about current affairs and feel ashamed of having no contribution, regretting that I did not study this profession early on to benefit others. Thus, I engraved this book to spread it throughout the land. Surely there will be benevolent gentlemen who read and practice it, mastering the art to prolong the lives of the people. This is the preface. On an auspicious day in the Gui month of Xin Chou year of Wanli, Zhao Wenbing, Censor of Shanxi Inspection Circuit, Yan Zhao Hanzhang, authored this.
Abstract of the Siku Quanshu: *Zhenjiu Daquan* (Complete Works on Acupuncture and Moxibustion), ten volumes, compiled by Yang Jizhou of the Ming Dynasty. Yang Jizhou was a medical official during the Wanli era; his native place is unknown. Based on his printing plate in Pingyang, he seems to be from Pingyang. This book contains a preface by Zhao Wenbing, Censor of Shanxi Inspection Circuit, stating that Zhao suffered from Wei-Bi syndrome, was cured by Yang's needles, and thus took his family's *Wei Sheng Zhen Jiu Yuanji Mi Yao*, supplemented, edited, and published under the current name. In the Ding You year of the Shunzhi era of our dynasty, Li Yuelui, Prefect of Pingyang, repaired the damaged old plates. The book takes the *Suwen* and *Nanjing* as its main basis, models bronze mannequins, draws illustrations, and provides explanations, which are quite detailed and comprehensive. However, the discussions are overly verbose.
*[Wu Kun's Six Collections of Needle Prescriptions]*, six volumes. Extant.
Self-Preface: A good physician does not merely control life and death; the responsibility is no less than competing with the Nine Tripods. Yet, only when acupuncture and medication are utilized to their utmost extent can one be worthy. Ancient sages tasted hundreds of herbs to show people how to use medicine and created nine types of needles to illustrate needling. This is because human life is extremely heavy, and the art of salvation must be detailed and thorough. During the Zhengtong era, the Sage considered that the Song dynasty copper mannequins had become worn out over time and ordered new ones to be cast, establishing medical officials to widely propagate education. Stone manuals were also carved, with prefaces written by the Emperor. The Sage's heart to protect the people was vast. His expectations for physicians were profound. As the saying goes, "Without acupuncture, there is no spirit; without moxibustion, there is no excellence." This is well-founded. In recent times, practitioners of the knife and scalpel lack average ability, dividing specialties for treating diseases without further investigation. Those with divine skill and exquisite art are rare, one in ten thousand. It is not that the methods are not subtle, but that there are no formulas to explore, leading to feelings of awe akin to looking at the ocean. Since my youth, I cultivated Confucianism and wandered with a pure mind. Various texts on acupuncture and needles were constantly researched. Before reaching adulthood, I traveled thousands of miles with my luggage, humbly seeking knowledge from teachers, not inferior to the seventy-two disciples. Thinking of taking goodness to enlighten the ignorant, I realized that a single basket load does not make a mountain. I often used the received needle prescriptions to treat corresponding symptoms, achieving miraculous results. However, exploring the reason for these miracles, I found contradictions and barriers to sudden enlightenment. After thirty-plus years, accumulating knowledge year by year, I finally broke previous delusions. Now, at the age of seventy-six, my age has doubled compared to when I first studied medical formulas. My ambition is to share goodness with others, completing these six collections. First *Shenzhao*, second *Kaimeng*, third *Zunjing*, fourth *Pangtong*, fifth *Fenshu*, sixth *Jianluo*. My humble insights here are opened by a thousand considerations. The heart of a skilled craftsman is unique and bitter; now I verify this. Using this to assist the manuals, do I dare to claim credit? Looking up at the Heavenly Court, pitying the crippled and lame, blessings are like rain and dew. If these six collections contribute to holy governance, they are merely like a water-lifting device helping sweet rain. How dare I claim merit? What I hope for is that one person has joy, all reach the realm of longevity, encompassing all directions, families enjoying pine-like longevity and individuals crane-like lifespan, without needing Ginseng and Poria, discarding needles and stones forever, so that divine skills on the pond have no place to施展, bringing private comfort to recluses. What else could I ask for? In the Ding Si year, Cheng Chushi Biao of Haiyang recovered from severe illness, promoted me to head of the medical forest, supported the six collections, and donated funds to engrave them, recording righteousness. Only this preface. Written on the Winter Solstice day of Wu Wu year, 46th year of Wanli, Great Qing.

Preface by Daqiao Shanren: Since Shennong treated diseases with herbs and plants, commentators say only a great sage could do so. Treating disease with herbs and plants still involves tasting them oneself to obtain their nature and flavor. For acupuncture and moxibustion, from where do we know the theory? Among the Five Classics and Four Books, only Mencius's phrase "seek mugwort from three years ago" exists, while acupuncture is unheard of. The method of moxibustion exists everywhere today, but acupuncture is not fully transmitted; even if transmitted, the secrets are not obtained, causing deep regret. However, I have read *Huangdi Neijing*, Qin Yueren's *Nanjing*, and below, discussing acupuncture and moxibustion most, especially detailed in needling methods. Why are capable persons so few today? The methods of following and opposing, tonifying and draining differ; suitability varies for men, women, old, and young. Everyone has their own theory. Because there are too many discussions, it becomes more complicated and inappropriate, leaving people unsure where to follow, thus losing the method. The Lin family of Shuanglin has been famous for acupuncture and moxibustion for a long time. There is Ling Qianyi, who comprehensively studied various books, cared about saving the world, abandoned the civil service examination career for medicine, and was especially proficient in acupuncture and moxibustion studies. He authored *Secret Essentials of Acupuncture and Moxibustion*, four volumes, particularly detailed in discussing needles. Distinguishing right from wrong,辨析 similar and suspected, revealing the subtle words of former sages and saints, gathering diverse views to return to one correctness. I know nothing about medicine, but today reading his words, it is like viewing my own palm lines, clearly countable and obtainable. (See *Collected Works*)
*[Ling Zhenhou's Collected Essentials of Acupuncture and Moxibustion]* Not seen.
Preface by Pan Lei: Among acupuncture and moxibustion practitioners in the land, only the Shuanglin Ling family is recommended. Their ancestors received acupuncture methods from unusual persons, curing diseases immediately upon contact. Within hundreds of miles nearby and far away, people flocked to them as if they were gods. Passing down several generations to the present, descendants mostly continue the profession, and Zhenhou is the most skillful and wonderful. Chronic diseases and lingering ailments achieved miraculous effects upon hand touch, countless in number. Wherever he went, carriages and caps gathered densely, yellow children and white-haired elders crowded around his horse's feet, blocking passage. Traveling through Central Plains and Hebei, moving to the capital as a guest, his reputation was widespread, reaching the Supreme One. Summoned into the forbidden palace, he frequently treated noble relatives, truly the highest honor. Yet Zhenhou's character was harmonious, easy, sincere, and straightforward. Treating people regardless of status, consistent from beginning to end, never boasting about his encounters, resembling a person of the Dao. I am happy to associate with him. Once he showed me a manuscript, saying: Acupuncture and moxibustion are precisely discussed in *Lingshu* and *Suwen*. Since then, transmitted books are extremely rare. I fear they will lose truth over time. Therefore, based on the books of Huangdi and Qibo, referencing various schools, narrating ancestral transmissions, expressing personal ideas, creating a *Collected Essentials* book to show future generations, hoping for my preface. Alas, the wonder of acupuncture and moxibustion lies precisely in not obtaining it from prescription books, yet Zhenhou does this? Although, a great craftsman cannot give skill to others, but has not failed to give rules and compasses. Rules are here; divine understanding depends on the person. The wonder of this art lies between following/opposing and timing, grasped in the heart and responded by the hand, cannot be transmitted by books. As for the names and shapes of meridians and acupoints, division of needles, degrees of fire, these can be transmitted by books. If later people can take what can be transmitted to deeply explore what cannot, getting the rabbit from the trap, getting the fish from the sieve, is the benefit of books not great? Zen Buddhism values not establishing language and text, yet lamp after lamp continues, still having transmitted books, let alone medicine? Those who say prescription books harm medicine do not blame the books themselves, but blame those who stick to one book without knowing how to adapt. (See *Suchutang Collected Works*)
