Individuals suffering from yellow edema (Huangzhong) should not be misdiagnosed with jaundice. Jaundice is characterized by the entire body turning yellow like gold, with both eyes and sclera becoming yellow, yet without any swelling of the face. The etiology of jaundice stems from steaming and staining caused by damp-heat; whereas the pathology of yellow edema involves damp-heat that is not severe, but is primarily caused by the harm of parasite accumulation or food stagnation. Occasionally, swallowing excessive amounts of hard food obstructs the pathways of the Spleen and Stomach, failing to digest over time. This leads to the loss of the Spleen and Stomach's transformative power, causing turbid Qi to ascend, resulting in a yellow and puffy face. If parasites are present, there may be vomiting of yellow fluid, erect hair, lusterless skin, and cravings for raw rice or tea leaves. If edema extends to the four limbs, it is difficult to treat; if swelling is confined to the abdomen, it is incurable; if dietary intake decreases, it is also incurable, due to the exhaustion of Stomach Qi.
