It must not be treated as a wind syndrome, nor should wind-dispelling herbs be used concurrently.
This condition is generally similar to epilepsy (epilepsy), but is more severe and characterized by deficiency compared to typical epilepsy; treatment should incorporate tonification.
It is mostly due to Qi deficiency with internal fire, accompanied by phlegm; thus, herbs such as Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) are appropriate.
[Appendix] In ancient texts, spasms caused by wind are referred to as "Zhi" (spasm/stiffness).
The *Classic of Internal Medicine* states: "All cases of spasm with neck stiffness belong to dampness."
"All cases of body arching backward belong to wind."
This indicates internal stagnation in the Yangming channel, with Yin qi circulating on the exterior.
It further states: "When Yang qi reaches its extreme, it may manifest with wind-like symptoms to regulate itself."
However, this manifestation of transformation is a sign of deficiency, not an actual wind pathogen.
Attached Formulas:

If chest fullness, trismus (lockjaw), teeth grinding, leg cramps, or inability to lie flat due to back rigidity occurs, use **Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction)** for purgation without hesitation.
*Xiao Xu Ming Tang*: See Stroke category.
*Da Cheng Qi Tang*: See Dysentery category.
For epilepsy caused by fright and phlegm, emesis (vomiting therapy) is suitable. The primary strategy is to resolve phlegm using Scutellariae Radix (Huanglian), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing), Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), and Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia). Treatment should be tailored based on the proportion of fire and phlegm; there will be no failure in cure.
Differentiate between phlegm and heat:
- If heat is present, clear the Heart with cooling herbs.
- If phlegm is present, mandatory emetic therapy is required. After vomiting, administer **Dongyuan Anshen Wan (Dongyuan Calming Spirit Pill)**.
The general principle favors emesis. Post-emesis, administer liver-calming agents such as Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), and Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong). **Longdan Xiegan Wan** is particularly suitable.
Epilepsy often arises from fright; fright causes the Shen (Spirit) to lose its residence, leaving the mind empty...
Dai Yuanli stated: Epilepsy is commonly known as "Pig Epilepsy Wind."
[Appendix] Epilepsy is classified into five types: Horse, Ox, Chicken, Pig, and Sheep epilepsy.
- Horse epilepsy: Mouth opening, head shaking, neighing sounds.
- Ox epilepsy: Eyes staring straight forward, abdominal distension.
- Chicken epilepsy: Head shaking, body arching backward, prone to fright.
- Sheep epilepsy: Frequent eye widening and tongue protrusion.
- Pig epilepsy: Frequent drooling.
These names derive from the accidental resemblance of symptoms.
During attacks, there is no obstruction of orifices by copious phlegm-saliva.
Symptoms include dizziness, falling, convulsions of hands and feet, pulling of mouth and eyes, rigidity of chest and back, roaring, and foaming at the mouth. Recovery occurs after approximately one meal time.
*Tingxiang San (Star and Fragrant Powder)* plus three Whole Scorpions (Quanxie) is indicated.
