Generally, due to the internal accumulation of phlegm-heat, although there are eight names such as *Ebi* (swollen tonsils blocking the throat), *Mushé* (wooden tongue), *Zishé* (sublingual swelling), *Chantou* (winding throat), and *Zouma* (running horse), the pathogenic mechanism is all fire.
The Ministerial Fire of Shaoyin and the Ministerial Fire of Shaoyang both connect with the throat; when qi becomes hot, it condenses. In severe cases, it leads to swelling; in more severe cases, it leads to obstruction (*Bi*); if obstruction becomes severe and unblocked, death ensues. Only *Houbi* (sore throat/obstruction) that occurs rapidly is caused by the Ministerial Fire. As for symptoms such as dryness and pain in the pharynx, swelling of the throat and jaw, and stiffness of the tongue, these are caused by the Sovereign Fire.
Treatment methods: For mild cases, use salty substances to soften hardness; for severe cases, use pungent substances to disperse. If phlegm is accumulated, induce vomiting; if severe, use Bian stone (stone acupuncture) to bleed. Human fire is pacified with cooling agents; Dragon fire is driven out by fire (i.e., administering cooling decoctions hot). It is advisable to puncture Shangyang (LU11) to bleed.
Formula: Xiaoshaoshi (Mirabilite) and Yaxiaoshi (Niter), each ground separately; add bile from a green carp onto the Mirabilite until dry, then grind into powder. Blow this powder into the throat with a bamboo tube; once phlegm is expelled, recovery follows.
Secret Recipe: Use the residue of tung oil dipped on a goose feather to brush and induce vomiting of phlegm. Alternatively, use Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Gongjiao) to induce vomiting.
Alternatively, grind Silkworm (Jiangcan) with fresh ginger and take orally to detoxify.
Alternatively, juice of fresh Mugwort (Aiye) also detoxifies.
Yushi San (Jade Spoon Powder): Treats wind-heat *Houbi* and Chantou Feng (winding throat wind).
Xiaoshaoshi (Mirabilite) (1 liang), Borax (Pengsha) (5 qian), Borneol (Naobo) (5 qian), Silkworm (Jiangcan). Blow into the throat with a bamboo tube.
Shenxiao San (Divine Efficacy Powder): Treats heat-induced swelling and loss of voice.
Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie Sui) (prepared separately), Castor Seed (Bimao) (peeled, 1 liang each).
Make honey pills the size of soap beans, chew and dissolve in the mouth.
Honey-fried Aconite Root (Fuzi): Treats cold in the fu organs causing closure of the pharyngeal gate and inability to swallow.
Raw large Aconite Root (Fuzi) (peeled and de-navelled), sliced, coated with honey, roasted until yellow, hold in mouth and swallow saliva.
Xionghuang Jiedu Wan (Realgar Detoxification Pill): Treats Chantou Feng and *Houbi*, sudden collapse and aphonia, lockjaw, and unconsciousness.
Realgar (Xionghuang) (1 qian, water-floating), Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome (Yujin), Croton Seed (Badou) (14 seeds, oil removed).
Make pills with vinegar paste, size of mung beans. Administer 9 pills with warm clear tea; stop once vomiting occurs.
Another Prescription: Chalcanthite (Danfan) (1 qian), wrap in flesh of Chinese Plum (Wumei), then wrap externally in cotton and hold in mouth.
Longhuo Badu San (Dragon Fire Antitoxic Powder): Treats acute Chantou conditions. First bleed with a needle, then apply this powder swept with fresh water.
Pyroxene (Yangqishi) [dosage missing], Longtan Earth (Fulonggan) (equal parts mixed with water for application).
Also, root of Daphne odora (Bairuixiang), grind with water and instill.
Symptoms of Swallowing (Swallowing refers to swallowing food over time): Swelling of the pharynx prevents swallowing. Dryness prevents swallowing. This may result from excessive drinking leading to coughing heat, or injury from vomiting/hemoptysis, all causing dryness of the pharyngeal system.
Symptoms of Throat Disease (The throat is the passage for sound entry and exit; accumulation of heat causes sudden swelling and blockage.)
Uvula (Colloquially called 'mo', located above.)
Cough with hoarseness and throat rupture, colloquially called 'sound scattering'.
