There are cases of shortness of breath, flaming fire, phlegm, and counterflow of yin-fire. For chronic asthma that has not yet manifested, the priority is to support healthy qi (Zheng Qi); once it manifests, the priority is to attack pathogenic factors. For shortness of breath, use Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) to tonify; for flaming fire ascending, descend Heart Fire and clear Lung Metal; for phlegm, the main approach is to descend phlegm and lower qi; for counterflow of yin-fire, tonify yin and descend fire. There are cases of shortness of breath and asthma due to qi deficiency, shortness of breath and asthma due to phlegm, and rising of fire from the lower abdomen due to yin deficiency. For urgent asthma with wind-phlegm, according to *Fu Ren Da Quan Liang Fang*: Qianmin Decoction (Qianmin Tang) combined with Dao Tan Decoction (Dao Tan Tang). For yin deficiency with phlegm causing urgent asthma, tonify yin and descend fire, using Siwu Decoction (Siwu Tang) added with Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) and Aurantium Fructus (Zhiqiao). For qi deficiency, use preparations such as Honey-fried Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), and Lycii Cortex (Digupi). Generally, for urgent asthma, bitter and cool medicines should not be used because the fire-qi is abundant; combining Dao Tan Decoction with Qianmin Decoction is excellent. For various asthmas that do not stop, use the "Jie method" (a drastic method to arrest symptoms), which stops after one or two doses. Use sparingly in people with qi deficiency. After the Jie method stabilizes the condition, treat phlegm according to phlegm and fire according to fire. Use Zanthoxylum Pericarpium Seed (Jiaomu) ground into an extremely fine powder, taken with ginger decoction to stop asthma. Both pills and powders can be used. Another method: steam Radish Seed (Luobozi) as the chief ingredient, burn Sophora Flavescens Pod (Zaojiao) to ash and grind into powder, make pills with ginger juice and honey, size like small paulownia seeds, take 50-70 pills per dose, dissolve in mouth to stop asthma. For yuan qi deficiency causing asthma and shortness of breath, use Shengmai San (Shengmai Powder). For upward rushing of qi with restlessness, it belongs to Lung Distension (Fei Zhang); if developing into Fengshui (Wind Water edema), sweating will cure it. Between autumn and winter, when wind-phlegm causes asthma, use Soufeng Huatan Wan (Soufeng Huatan Pill). When lung dampness causes asthma, grind Sweet Descurainia Seed (Tiantingli) into fine powder, make pills with jujube flesh. When lying down, qi floats to the lung; generally, for ascending qi, use Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Coptis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi), and Aurantii Fructus (Qingpi) to descend. Dai Yun said: there is phlegm asthma, urgent breathing asthma, stomach deficiency asthma, and flaming fire asthma. Phlegm asthma comes and goes, with phlegm sounds during asthma; urgent breathing asthma has rapid breathing without phlegm sounds; flaming fire asthma comes and goes, decreases after eating, but worsens after eating. This is generally because there is excess fire in the stomach and thick phlegm above the diaphragm. When food enters the throat, it pushes down the thick phlegm, and asthma stops. After a while, food enters the stomach, further assisting fire and phlegm to rise again, causing asthma to worsen. Laypeople do not understand this and treat it as stomach deficiency, using drying and hot medicines, adding fire to fire. Formerly, General Ye suffered from this. Various doctors treated it as stomach deficiency and failed to cure him. Later, he was stabilized by using Daoshui Wan (Daoshui Pill) to promote urination five or seven times. There is also stomach deficiency asthma, characterized by lifting shoulders and sucking in the belly, with continuous asthma. To treat rebellious qi, asthma, and upward rushing qi, Zijin Dan (Zijin Pill) can be used, but it must be stored for three years or more. Avoid pork and alcohol. A two-year-old child suffered from phlegm asthma. Seeing his dull spirit and fatigue, and deep disease qi, it was definitely not an external contraction, but fetal toxin. This was likely caused by his mother's preference for spicy and hot foods during pregnancy. Do not give resolving and dispersing medicines. Prescribed Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Forsythiae Fructum (Lianqiao), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Coptis Rhizoma (Lian), Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao), Chenpi, Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), and Akebia Caulis (Mutong) decocted, with Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) added. He recovered after several days. A woman, at six or seven months of pregnancy, suffered from phlegm cough and urgent asthma unable to lie down. Focus on the lungs: Northern Bupleuri Radix (Beichaihu, 1 qian), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 2 qian), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 2 qian), Morus Alba Bark (Sangbaipi, 1 qian), Licorice Root (Gancao, half qian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 1.5 qian). One sweat cured it. Afterwards, she took Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Licorice Root (Gancao), Morus Alba Bark (Sangpi), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin).
