Blurred vision, dizziness, coma, and loss of consciousness constitute Blood Fainting (Xueyun). There are three causes: first, exhaustion of Qi and clouding of the Spirit due to severe fatigue; second, impending collapse of Qi due to massive blood loss; third, clouding of the Spirit due to Phlegm-Fire mounting upward while deficiency exists. In these three cases, urgently administer Shenghua Decoction (Shenghua Tang) to resolve masses, alleviate pain, transform stasis, and generate new blood. This allows blood to be generated and Qi to become clear. Frequent administration over several doses treats the confusion, and Qi and Blood will stabilize.
Externally, treat it using the method of fumigating the nose with vinegar-steamed leeks. Do not mistakenly attribute this to malignant blood rushing upward and clouding the Heart orifices, thereby rashly using blood-dispersing agents. Nor should you attribute it to Phlegm-Fire and use substances that consume healthy Qi, so as to avoid leaving aftereffects.
For Blood Fainting accompanied by pallor and depletion of form, administer Shenghua Duoming Decoction (Shenghua Duoming Tang) with doubled Ginseng Radix. Do not hesitate due to fear of excessive tonification, which may lead to delayed treatment and death. If fainting is caused by Phlegm-Fire mounting upward due to deficiency, add Tangerine Peel (Juhong) (4 fen) to Shenghua Decoction; even in severe deficiency, add Ginseng Radix (2 qian). For obese individuals prone to phlegm, add Phragmitis Caulis Juice (Zhuli) (1 chi) and Zingiberis Recensis Rhizoma Juice (Jiangzhi) (half chi).
In cases of fainting, absolutely avoid using blood-breaking herbs such as Sappanwood (Sumu). If pain from blood masses is severe, mix Shenghua Decoction with Motherwort Paste (Yimu Gao), or administer with Deer Antler Ash (Lujiao Hui), or administer with Corydalis Rhizoma Powder (Yanhusuo San); all are effective.
