[Fangfeng Tongsheng San] (from *Xuanming Fanglun*) discusses: Wind, cold, and heat are the origins of various diseases. The viscera and bowels of humans are all where wind arises. Fire-heat is said to be the root of Yang; curving, straightening, shaking, and moving are said to be the functions of wind. Dizziness and vomiting indicate severe wind-heat. When wind-heat is obstructed and stagnant, wind-fire generates from heat; heat is the root, while wind is the branch. Whenever "wind" is mentioned, it refers to wind-heat disease. Qi stagnation, tendon and vessel tension with fatigue, limbs dry and flaccid, dizziness of head and eyes, stiffness and pain in waist and spine, tinnitus, nasal congestion, bitter taste in mouth and dry tongue, difficulty in throat, chest and diaphragm stuffiness, cough, vomiting, wheezing and fullness, thick and sticky sputum and nasal discharge, dry-heat accumulation in intestines and stomach, dysuria and strangury, or night sweats during sleep, teeth grinding and sleep-talking, muscle twitching and palpitations due to fright, or intestinal and stomach depression causing fluid inability to moisten the whole body but instead leading to excessive urination; or damp-heat internal depression causing occasional sweating and diarrhea; or fluid loss leading to dry strangury; or intestinal-stomach dry depression causing fluid inability to distribute externally, instead retaining as dampness and causing diarrhea, or alternating dry-dampness causing intermittent constipation and diarrhea; or exterior Yang harmony where Zhengqi (Wei Qi) combines with pathogenic heat and enters the interior, extreme Yang resembling Yin causing chills, irritability, and thirst. (Chills occur because exterior Qi is cold; thirst occurs because interior heat is severe.) Or malaria that persists for a long time. (The classics state that when pathogenic heat combines with Wei Qi entering the interior, there are chills; when combining and emerging to the exterior, there is fever; when combined, the disease acts; when separated, the disease ceases.) Or wind-pathogen migrating causing pain and numbness; or deficiency of Kidney Water and True Yin with sudden excess of Heart Fire pathogenic heat causing collapse; or sudden stroke with prolonged aphasia; or any sudden loss of voice unable to speak; or silent wind epilepsy; or headache from washing hair; or broken-wind trauma; or various convulsions from stroke; and various childhood malnutrition heat syndromes; or fright-wind accumulation heat; typhoid epidemic febrile diseases unable to be distinguished; or extreme heat depression causing ineffective expulsion; or extreme heat blackening and sinking near death; or wind-heat sores and scabies in adults and children persisting long-term; or scalp scaling, whole body dark purple and white mottling; or purple-red wind pimples and urticaria on face and nose, commonly called Lung Wind; or forming Fengli (Leprosy), known in the world as Great Wind Disease; or Changfeng hemorrhoids and fistulas; resolving alcohol-induced heat toxicity; resolving various pathogenic injuries; regulating Typhoid before sweating, treating head/neck/body pain; and Lianggan (dual channel) syndromes. Also treats postpartum blood damage and deficiency leading to Yin decline and residual Yang depression causing various heat syndromes, abdominal fullness and painful obstruction, irritability and thirst, wheezing and oppression, delirium and madness, or extreme heat generating wind causing dryness and depression, stiff tongue and locked jaw, muscle twitching, all wind-heat dryness syndromes, depression causing foul matter not descending, abdominal fullness and cramping pain with coma. (If foul matter is excessive and vomiting occurs, this should not be taken.) Also eliminates major and minor sores and toxic poisons. Also treats falls and bruises, injury pain, or heat accumulation causing urinary/fecal retention, abdominal urgency and pain, abdominal fullness and wheezing. All are treated.
