[Guolao San (National Elder Powder)]
Treats sores, smallpox/rash, ding swelling (acute purulent infection), yong and ju (general term for various cutaneous suppurative diseases), and all kinds of severe malignant sores. Also treats arsenic poisoning, mushroom toxin poisoning, and delirium or mania caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease.
Preparation: On the third or fourth day of the fifth lunar month, select premium large Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草), in any quantity, and grind it into a fine powder. Take a section of large bamboo, retaining the nodes at both ends, and drill a small hole at one end. Fill the bamboo with the licorice powder. Seal the hole tightly with a wooden plug to prevent gas leakage. Bind the bamboo with rope, wait for five days, then place it in a dung pit, using a brick to weigh it down to the bottom. After forty-nine days, take it out, wash it clean with running water, let it dry, sun-dry the medicine, grind it again, and store it in a porcelain vessel. When children show early signs of smallpox/rash, administer one qian (approx. 3-5g) each time, mixed with light sugar water. It also treats various malignant sores and epidemic plague toxins; it can be added to other medicines for internal use.
[Xiaoling Dan (Little Spirit Pill)]
Treats infantile vomiting and diarrhea, as well as "jing qi guo ru" (milk stasis due to fright), abdominal distension.
Formula: Croton Seed (Badou, 巴豆) (peeled, oil removed, 2.5 fen) Arsenite (Renyan, 人言/Realgar is often confused here but Renyan specifically refers to Arsenic/Orpiment contextually in ancient texts, usually Realgar/Xionghuang is separate. Given "Renyan" alongside Xionghuang, this likely refers to Orpiment/Realgar or Arsenic trioxide depending on specific lineage, but WHO standardizes Renyan as Realgar/Orpiment derivative or Arsenic. In modern safety contexts, these are toxic. We translate literally.) Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) (3 fen)
Grind into powder, mix with melted wax to form pills the size of rice grains. Administer 5-7 pills each time with cool tea. Avoid hot foods for one hour after administration.
